Military Awards: Medals and Ribbons

Military honors and decorations are used by the United States Army to recognize its soldiers’ achievements in combat and non-combat-related duties.

In this article, we will provide details of military awards such as medals and ribbons. Let’s look at military medals and ribbons for the sake of this blog. The majority of the time, both are synonymous and are, for all intents and purposes, the same thing: a service award.

MEDAL OF HONOR

During the Civil War, the first medals and ribbons were awarded to army personnel. Individual commanders bestowed these unofficial honors. The Congressional Medal of Honor, which is the highest medal of distinction, was the Army’s first official honor.

The Medal of Honor is the highest military honor that the United States government can bestow. It is bestowed by the President of the United States on behalf of Congress to members of the United States Armed Forces who have distinguished themselves through exceptional gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty.

There are 3 different versions (1 for the Army, 1 for the Air Force, and 1 for the Navy, the Marine Corps, and the Coast Guard).

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE CROSS

The Distinguished Service Cross (DSC) is the second-highest military medal a member of the United States Army can receive (and previously, the United States Army Air Forces). It is given to people who have shown remarkable bravery:

While engaged in combat with a US foe;

While participating in combat actions involving a hostile foreign army; or

While serving in an armed battle with friendly foreign troops against an opposing armed force in which the United States is not a belligerent party.

The Distinguished Service Cross is awarded for actions that go above and above those needed for all other U.S. military awards, but do not qualify for the Medal of Honor. The Distinguished Service Cross (Navy and Marine Corps, as well as the Coast Guard when operating under the Department of the Navy’s authority) and the Air Force Cross are equivalent.

NAVY CROSS

The Navy Cross is the second-highest military decoration that a member of the United States Navy, United States Marine Corps, or United States Army can receive. It is given to people who have shown remarkable bravery.

The actions that earn the Navy Cross must be above and beyond what is required for all other US combat awards, but do not qualify for the Medal of Honor. The Navy Cross is the military’s equivalent of the Army’s Distinguished Service Cross and the Air Force’s Cross (Air Force).

AIR FORCE CROSS

The Air Force Cross is the second-highest military honor that a member of the United States Air Force can receive.

SILVER STAR

The Silver Star is the third-highest military battle honor that a member of the US Armed Forces can receive.
