Plastic Mermaids Release New Single and Video For ‘Girl Boy Girl’

Plastic Mermaids are back with another irresistible single from their forthcoming second LP ‘It’s Not Comfortable To Grow’. Titled ‘Girl Boy Girl’, the single follows the hugely well received ‘Disposable Love’ and ‘Something Better’ and is also accompanied with an enthralling video, which has been created by the multi-talented Isle of Wight outfit.

Complete with Mermaids’ trademark synths and a touch of 80s nostalgia, ‘Girl Boy Girl’ visits the murky territory of reigniting a relationship as frontman Doug Richards expands; “Girl Boy Girl is an uncomfortable place, an unspoken awkwardness and tension. Always convoluting, never resolving. Just like this perpetual frustration when a relationship isn’t right but none has the language or understanding to fix it. And then thinking that adding a 3rd party to the mix is going to solve the problems…oh dear.”

Released alongside the triumphant single is an equally triumphant video in which Doug relays the lyrics situated in uncomfortable scenarios, as Doug explains; “For the video I wanted to try and convey that kind of awkward, unresolved, something-not-right feeling and also the self-inflicted-ness of it. So I tried to create a series of uncomfortable situations to sing through. I didn’t really consider how painful it would be to create though! I felt beaten up by the end. The chickens was the scariest shot by far, you can just about make out my bleeding lip, they kept going for my teeth lol.”

The singles taken from the upcoming LP have received multiple plays on BBC 6 Music, including a premiere on Lauren Laverne’s show. The band also performed a blistering set at this year’s Glastonbury which received a 5* review from The Independent and are gearing up on a mega UK Tour with headline shows at London’s Village Underground, Southampton’s Joiners and Bristol’s Rough Trade.
