Whether you loved or hated the fourth season of the smash Netflix series Stranger Things, one thing that is undeniable is that the latest misadventures of those kooky kids from Hawkins, Indiana was a stone cold smash hit, shattering all previous viewer ratings records for this ever-evolving show. With an unknown amount of down-time between this latest season and the next (which will also be the final season), many are questioning exactly what the two creators of Stranger Things – Matt and Ross Duffer – have on their upcoming dance card. Fortunately for all of us, our turban-wearing prognosticators over at The Hollywood Reporter have some answers to that nagging question…
On the heels of the release of the penultimate season of Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers have revealed a lot of what’s on their professional plate going forward. Not surprisingly, the creative duo roughly sketched out their in-the-works spinoff series from Stranger Things. This point has been speculated on for some time now both in and out of the press, and we now have confirmation officially that such a creature is forthcoming. Details are still sparse, but it occupies a short list for the two men of some other intriguing projects they’re toiling away on, including a stage play set within the Stranger Things universe and a series adaptation of Stephen King and Peter Straub’s popular novel The Talisman. Also on their busy docket is a live-action version of the popular anime series Death Note. Finally, rounding a hectic schedule out quite nicely, is an undisclosed original series the two will shepherd from another uber-creative duo, Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews of Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance fame.
Perhaps the most exciting aspect of all of these projects – which fall under the purview of a vaunted nine-figure deal with Netflix – is the formation of the Duffer Brothers brand-new production shingle Upside Down Pictures. This production house which is named after that infamous alternate dimension/reality in Stranger Things will be overseen by newcomer to the pop culture fight, Hilary Leavitt.
In a press release announcing the formation of Upside Down Pictures, the duo said that their new shingle will create the sort of movies, TV and comics which inspired them while they were coming of age – “stories that take place at that beautiful crossroads where the ordinary meets the extraordinary, where big spectacle co-exists with intimate character work, where heart wins over cynicism.” In this day and age, we’ll gladly take it!
So busy and exciting times for the Duffer Brothers; keep your ever-questing eyes and ears peeled to Vents for any and all news pertaining to the Duffers and Stranger Things!
