“Tale as old as time…True as it can be…Neither one prepared…Beauty and the beast…”
The fragmented rendition (as sung exquisitely by the legendary Angela Lansbury) of Tale As Old As Time has been dripping through my old noggin ever since hearing that one of Disney’s classic animated cartoons Beauty and the Beast is set to receive the coveted live action treatment courtesy of Disney subsidiary ABC.
From our The Gallopin’ Gaucho fanatics over at The Hollywood Reporter comes the news that a little animated movie set to celebrate its 30th anniversary that a lot of folks came of age to – Disney’s Beauty and the Beast – is headed to the world of live action through the devices of ABC, director Hamish Hamilton (what a name!) and executive producer Jon M. Chu. Beauty and the Beast now joins the ranks of other animated Disney features which have made the leap from hand-drawn marvels to larger than life live action (for the second time actually; a 2017 live action film based off of the cartoon also exists out there). Some of those luminaries include 101 Dalmations, Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella, The Jungle Book, Dumbo and Aladdin. “Hand drawn animation? We don’t need no stinkin’ hand drawn animation!”
The new version of Beauty and the Beast will be a two-hour, live-action special with a little dash of animation thrown in for good measure and will air on ABC just in time for the holidays on December 15, 2022.
In a press release touting this iteration of 1991’s classic Beauty and the Beast (which was ably directed by Gary Trousdale and Kirk wise, thank you very much), executive producer Jon M. Chu said that “Beauty and the Beast was always a game-changing cinematic experience for me. When the animated movie came out, I watched it multiple times in the first weekend. It showed me the outer limits of what animated artists and storytellers could achieve, so the fact that I get to executive produce a tribute to all the creatives that made this masterpiece through our Electric Somewhere company is a dream I didn’t even think was possible. With world-class creatives and talent to reinterpret the classic music numbers (with a few surprises), I can’t wait for the audiences, in person and at home, to experience what we have in store for them. It’s a true celebration of creativity.”
We’ll absolutely be checking this new rendition of Beauty and the Beast out and hope you will be, too!
