East Coast Talent: Moreno

As someone who’s part of the music industry, one of my greatest pleasures is being able to spot tracks that have that ineffable earworm quality, before they gain mainstream popularity. At this point, my friends are probably quite tired of me bringing up how I told them all about Baby Keem, way before he got attention for Orange Soda.

So, naturally, when I find out that a music producer who’s worked with the likes of Jadakiss is involved in a project with a new artist that most people have never heard of before, it’s cause for me to sit up and take notice. But to be honest, I can’t pretend that I knew all that when I first came across the track. And more to the point, what really interests me is that this discovery led me to another track: AMG, the latest single released by rising artist, Moreno

I was listening to “Jimmy Cooks”, from Drake’s new album, ‘Honestly, Nevermind’, when out of the blue, YouTube Music (yeah, I prefer YouTube Music over Spotify — sue me!) served up an intriguing sounding track with a dreamy, synth-choir-like intro. The track just had that unordinary stickiness to it that I’m always craving for, but what’s more, I just couldn’t shake the feeling that I’d heard something vaguely similar before.

Ever had that kinda audio deja vu, where you hear a cool new song, and you just know it reminds you of some other track that you love, but for the life of you, you just can’t figure out which one, and now you can’t sleep or stop thinking about it until you figure it out? Yeah. Exactly.

So, obviously, I had to look it up.

As is sadly the case with most new artists, YouTube Music hadn’t yet populated much info on their standard artist page, so, me being me, I had to do a little digging. A couple searches later, I discovered that this catchy track has got beats by shawn2hot. As you do, I was checking out shawn2hot’s Insta, and that’s when I finally had that lightbulb moment.

A while back, one of shawn2hot’s videos had popped up on my Insta feed, and I remembered that when I checked out Vince’s posts back then, I’d come across a cool new background track…  which was, in fact — you guessed it — reminiscent of the sound from AMG that had me absolutely hooked.

All of which is my extremely roundabout preface to the fact that, in AMG, Moreno’s pulled off a great job of combining a memorable melody with rhythmic lyrics and a catchy rhyme scheme that features half bar, full bar, and internal rhymes as well as some clever wordplay (like the clever play with “AMG”, in “Honey kept pushing that AMG”). That’s a lot of things going right, especially in a track by a relatively new artist.

Interestingly, Moreno also has another single out already, “He Said, She Said”, and although it has a completely different sound as compared to AMG, it seems to share that same catchy vibe. If I were a betting man, I’d bet that there’s a lot more great stuff where that came from. Moreno — remember that name. You’ll be hearing it a lot more in the future.
