After the 2016 release of director Kirk Jones’ My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 – the continuing romantic comedy about the rites of passage as it relates to families and marriage – it was touch-and-go regarding the possibility of turning the twenty year old saga into a genuine trilogy. The sophomore effort, though boasting the acting prowess of such thespians as Nia Vardalos, John Corbett, Lainie Kazan and the late Michael Constatine (along with the behind the scenes acumen of star-studded producers Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson), scored a somewhat disappointing $90 million smackers at the worldwide box-office before slinking away to Blu-ray and late night streaming, calling into question the possibility of a genuine follow-up.
Fans of Toula and Ian who were concerned about ever seeing their beloved characters back on the silver screen should rejoice on this bit of news from our Before Sunset pals over at Variety: My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 is officially in production and shooting in the beautiful country of Greece (in Athens, to be precise) even as I hammer out these timeless words.
In a press release, My Big Fat Greek Wedding guru and star Nia Vardalos announced that the third film in the franchise is currently up and shooting in Greece, with Vardalos herself handling the directing chores this go-around: “We are in Greece filming My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 and thank you for all the lovely messages of just waiting. Thank you to Playtone, Gold Circle, HBO and Focus and much love and gratitude to you all for your support as we waited to film. Greece baby; Greece!”
In a related story about the still fresh production of the new Greek Wedding flick, a near disaster was averted late this week on the open-sea where shooting was occuring after two speedboats apparently involved in the production collided, resulting in minor injuries for one Greek national and stranding cast and crew of the upcoming film before rescue boats arrived and safely transported everyone back to shore.
Not much is known about the next chapter in the My Big Fat Greek Wedding story. One salient thing that is known about the new film is that it will not feature audience favorite character Gus who was portrayed in the first two films by legendary actor Michael Constatine; Constatine passed away in 2021, alas.
