Gino Pozzo, the owner of Watford Football Club, has long loved the sport. From his days as a child cheering on his favorite players, he has a passion for the game that is unrivaled. However, that doesn’t stop fans from criticizing his decision if he decides to change his football manager. In fact, the editor can expect plenty of letters every time a new announcement is made. However, Pozzo has proved that there’s more than enough evidence to support his decisions, particularly after such a stunning track record. We look at what history has taught us about how he runs his club.
Nearly 10 Years of Proof
Prior to when Pozzo took over, Watford had witnessed some pretty poor managerial tactics. Since Pozzo took over nearly a decade ago, fans have enjoyed two promotions from the Championship, as well as six seasons in the Premier League, and an FA Cup Final. So it’s not as though Pozzo has been making decisions without factoring in the consequences. When he decides to swap out a manager, it’s because he’s done the math on what it will mean for the club. Retaining a manager just to avoid criticism would be as foolish as accepting unnecessary losses.
An Exciting Centenary
Watford will be celebrating its 100th anniversary at the Vic in July 2022, and not everyone remembers what it was like way back when the club started. For the first few decades, Watford largely knew stagnation or defeat in the lower divisions of the league. Fans today don’t realize that the chairman would reward players with pork pies when they came back from an away game. There might not be anything wrong with pork pies, but it wasn’t exactly the calling card of the hottest team in football either.
In 1976, that all took a turn for the better. Elton John would take over, and the league would receive three promotions to the top division and remain there for six seasons. Once that all came to a conclusion, the team went back to its more customary records. This is not to say that there were no accomplishments, but they were sporadic at best from 1987 until Gino Pozzo got hold of the team.
Once he was in charge, there was a nearly immediate upswing. His efforts have been so noteworthy that he inspires trust from those who pay attention to the annals of history. If the future is anything like the past, it seems likely that Pozzo will be able to steer the ship to victory (as he’s done in the past).
Gino Pozzo and Watford
Pozzo’s family has long been known for their successful businesses. From woodworking to appliances to football clubs, the clan strives for results in everything they do. They used the money from their woodworking business to buy a football club in the 1980s in Italy. They sent their son Gino to Harvard, and they accepted his decision when he chose to buy a football club of his own.
Gino had seen his parents push past obstacle after obstacle, not unlike how football players have to do the same every day of their careers. When he searched for a football club, he wasn’t looking for the one with the best record. In fact, he was looking for one that was relatively inexpensive, so he could turn it around. This is what his father did for the football club in Italy, and it’s what he felt born to do. (In fact, Gino’s family would buy another football club in Italy and manage to make that one a success too.)
Gino doesn’t just love his club and the fans who support it. He’s fallen hard for the city too. He wants nothing more than to bring people a Premier League title, and he’s willing to go to great lengths to get it. If he makes changes, it’s not without realizing how the ripple effects will reach their way out to other people. On the contrary, he’s probably thought about this more than the average owner. Should he make the call to move forward with it, it’s because he believes it will help make Watford FCthe best it can be.
