In her latest single this Texas-based artist, Eraste (air-este), continues to shine as she describes profoundly personal yet relatable experiences. The upbeat track and introspective lyrics explore feelings of being a stranger to oneself and being haunted by the expectations of other people.
The song is a slow pump on the beat to your heart because we instantly know when Eraste is asking “why can’t you see me”, that this is a love story that’s probably not going well. The vocal delivery is perfectly scattered and jumpy while still landing every beat that further accentuates and asserts the mood. The vocal presentation is what makes Eraste such a standout. I do everything I can to sing along. Hilariously I’m unable to keep up with the placement, but I chase the delivery like a kid after an ice cream truck. I can see the crowds chanting – all the while all of us know we all have changed something about ourselves at some point just to get someone’s attention. “Lead Role” is what we all try to be to get that person to see us!!!
Eraste shares, “‘Lead Role’ is perfectly summed up by the line, “I’m here, why can’t you see me? Tell me what you’re perceiving, and I’ll break myself apart until I feel like her again. She continues, “Sometimes when we are growing, people only see the version of us they want to see, and this song is about being haunted by people’s expectations for myself; and how I wish I could “play that part” for them. It’s like my old self is frozen in time and even though I’ve moved on, the people I love kept asking me to be a less authentic version of myself. I found myself pretending a lot, making myself smaller, making myself less; but in the end if I pretend to be someone, I’m not I’m only hurting myself.”
Eraste brings her unconventional upbringing to her music, creating an honest product of fear and loneliness; with her extremely distinct vocal tone. Eraste’s piercing voice combines with her raw emotion in her debut single, “Break My Own Heart”, as well as gives insight into her inspiration from artists like Lorde and Halsey. She went on to release a 5 song EP, ‘crashing every party’ that was described as “…the equivalent of neon makeup running down tear-stained cheeks with hard-hitting emotional lyrics…a rejection of stylistic boundaries”
