What is the proper way to charge LiFePO4 cells? That is a very regular inquiry people often do. It’s obvious that a LiFePO4 battery charger should be used. If you have LiFePO4 batteries, you should only use a charger intended for LiFePO4; other lithium-ion chemistries demand a greater voltage than what a LiFePO4 charger provides. We frequently get asked if it is possible to charge lithium iron phosphate with a lead-acid battery charger. If the voltage settings are within the range that is safe for LiFePO4 cells, then the short answer is yes.
EXAMINATION OF CHARGERS
Make sure the cords on your LiFePO4 charger are well-insulated and in good shape before you plug it in. The charger’s terminal connectors and the battery’s terminals should be clean and a good fit for optimal conductivity and connection. Setting the proper torque requires consulting the datasheet for the battery in question.
PRINCIPLES FOR CHARGING
LiFePO4 batteries do not need to be charged after every usage if they are not completely depleted. When LiFePO4 batteries are only partially charged, they are not destroyed (PSOC). LiFePO4 batteries can be recharged after each usage or when they reach 80% depth of drain (20 percent SOC). If the battery’s voltage drops below 10 volts and the Battery Management System (BMS) shuts it off, the load should be taken off and the battery charged as soon as possible using a LiFePO4 battery charger.
TEMPERATURE OF CHARGING
Charging a LiFePO4 battery is safe between 32 and 113 degrees Fahrenheit (0 and 45 degrees Celsius). While charging, the voltage of LiFePO4 batteries does not need to be adjusted for hot or cold environments. If the battery management system (BMS) disconnects because of cold, it won’t charge electricity again until the battery warms up. The battery will need to cool down before the BMS will accept charging if it disconnects due to high temperatures. For the BMS low-temperature, cut-off and high-temperature reconnect values, check the corresponding datasheet for your battery type.
To prevent the lithium battery from depleting and to keep you powered, the heater is powered independently from the battery and instead by the charger. The LT lithium battery has built-in heating and monitoring mechanisms, so all you have to do is plug it into the LiFePO4 charger and go about your business.
