There are an abundance of streaming options these days. Many movies are at your fingertips. This week, I am going to showcase a way of streaming films that you may not have known existed. Plus, it supports libraries! The app in question is Hoopla. Hoopla is a free app that is for libraries. You know how back in the day you could check out a film from a library? Well now with your library card you can get on Hoopla. I first found the app when trying to watch Barcelona, a film that was only available on Hoopla. There are actually a lot of really good movies on Hoopla. If you have a library card, you don’t even need to pay for another streaming service. Enjoy your weekend of movie watching thanks to the library.
I liked the movie Heathers the first time I saw it. The second time I saw it I enjoyed it more, because something unlocked for me. Heathers isn’t a dark comedy. It’s a horror film. Viewed like that, it clicks. There is some humor in there, but it’s decidedly not a comedy. It is a good movie, though. It’s a dark movie to start with for an evening of movie watching, but you’ll manage.
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou is still my favorite Wes Anderson movie. Bill Murray is fantastic in it. The whole cast is stellar. The movie is funny, poignant, and looks great. We’re building up here, going from a horror film with some comedic elements to a comedy with a fair amount of drama and pathos in it. As long as you aren’t anti-Anderson, there’s a lot to like about The Life Aquatic.
Finally, we end with a full-on comedy, and a silly one at that. UHF is the “Weird Al” Yankovic film. It’s as silly as you would expect. The movie has a lot of sketch elements to it, and the plot is light and secondary. Yankovic is also a decent actor at best. Still, the movie is really funny, and an ideal choice to end a night of movie watching, as it has cult movie aspects to it.
