UPDATE: “Scream 6” Casting News

So where were we?

It’s been a real rollercoaster ride following the trials and travails of Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media’s upcoming horror sequel Scream 6, so much so that a dance card is needed just to account for exactly what bit of breaking news is coming down the pike at any particular hour. Of course the big story that sent tongues a-wagging is the decision by latter day Scream Queen and Final Girl Neve Campbell to put her character of Sidney Prescott on ice for the new film after being offered a less than satisfactory chunk of money by producers of the upcoming sixth installment to reprise her iconic role. That bit of deflating news even managed to handily upstage the rather notable casting of legendary character actor Dermot Mulroney just a few days prior; it’s to laugh, right?

We’re back this week Dear and Constant Reader to supply you with the very latest reliable skinny on what’s going on with Scream 6 as it inches closer to its inevitable production start date later this summer. First things first, it has been confirmed that the new film will be set in NYC, eschewing its normal stomping grounds of Woodsboro, California. And now, courtesy of our horror aficionados over at Bloody Disgusting News, we have even more new names to add to the growing roster of the cast…

Joining returning alums Courtney Cox, Hayden Panettiere (from the fourth film in the franchise), Melissa Barrera, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding and Jenna Ortega for Scream 6 will be consummate actors par excellence Jack Champion (Avatar 2: The Way of Water), Devyn Nekoda (Utopia Falls) and Josh Segarra (AJ and the Queen).

The Scream franchise has a reputation for keeping its plot details very vague (at best), so it’s nigh impossible to ferret out much more than the broadest of brushstrokes for the upcoming film. The official tagline from the studios doesn’t offer much respite in that regard, either: “The Scream saga continues with the four survivors of the Ghostface killings as they leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter.” See what we mean?

Regarding the New York City setting for the new film: Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett – both of whom directed the last entry of the series – are not the first to shuffle a beloved horror movie franchise into the streets of the Big Apple – 1989’s Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (ironically another film produced by Paramount) attempted a similar feat, to mixed results.

We’ll all see how things shake out when Scream 6 hits movie screens on March 31, 2023!
