Why Running Is Such a Rewarding Hobby

Millions of people enjoy the hobby of running, and they find it to be physically and mentally stimulating. What is it about running that makes it such a valuable and rewarding hobby for so many people? And how can you get involved?

The Freedom

Some people get started with running because they love the freedom associated with it. You can run almost anywhere, as long as there is a solid surface for you. You can run on the sidewalk, on the street, on a track, or on a trail in the woods, and you can do it whenever you want. Moving quickly and with unrestrained movement also provides you with a sense of liberation, helping you relieve stress and feel more connected with your surroundings.

The Challenge

For some people, running is a stimulating challenge. These types of people like to challenge themselves and overcome obstacles as a demonstration of personal growth. Over time, as a runner, you’ll set gradually more advanced and challenging goals that you work hard to achieve.

For example, when you first start out, you might set a goal of achieving a certain distance, like finishing a mile or completing a 10k. As you gain more progress, you might set a goal to lower your 10k time, hoping to set new personal bests and potentially compete with peers.

As you make personal progress and overcome new challenges, you’ll feel more confident and more accomplished. This can also carry over into other aspects of your life.

The Social Events

Though running can be solitary, and it often is, it also has excellent potential as a group activity. You can meet up with other runners in your area and go running at a specific place twice a week. You can pair up with a friend and train together. And of course, you can sign up for big races like marathons and meet all kinds of new people.

The Runner’s High

The “runner’s high” is a specific phenomenon that happens to runners after pushing themselves past a certain point; a rush of endorphins and endocannabinoids flood your brain, giving you a sense of pain relief, stress relief, and mild euphoria. Many runners end up chasing this natural high, pushing themselves to the limit so they can feel this natural reward.

The Simplicity

Running is also a simple and highly accessible hobby. You don’t need to educate yourself for years to be safe, nor do you need years of practice to begin running effectively. Instead, all you really need is a pair of good shoes, comfortable attire, and any publicly accessible outdoor area where running is permitted. If you can’t run consistently at first, you can always start with brisk walking.

The Higher Stamina

Working out regularly in the form of running gives you access to higher stamina. Your lung capacity will increase, your muscles will have more endurance, and you’ll be able to tolerate prolonged exercise is much easier. You’ll be able to do more things, get less tired, and show off your endurance.

The Increased Lifespan

Even if they only run once a week, runners can see a reduced risk of premature death of 27 percent. That’s because running is one of the best cardiovascular exercises available. You’ll be working out your legs, working out your cardiovascular system, and burning calories, helping you maintain a healthy weight and a healthy body overall.

Getting Started With Running

So how do you get started with running?

There’s really no secret to it; you just have to run. The best piece of equipment you can buy is a good pair of shoes, so go to a local shoe store and try on several varieties to see what feels best when you run. Then, work with a personal trainer or watch videos online to learn the basics of proper form. Also, it’s a good idea to talk with your doctor before starting any new exercise regimen.

From there, you can branch out in many directions. You can join a running meetup, start practicing for a race, put together a training regimen with a personal trainer, or start your own unique journey. The more you run, the easier it’s going to get – and the more fun you’ll have.

Running isn’t a perfect copy for everyone. For some people, it’s tedious, exhausting, and lonely, especially at the beginning. But if you can deal with the disadvantages and the challenges of running, you may find yourself appreciating it on the other side of it.

For millions of people, running remains a source of motivation, inspiration, and personal fulfillment. If you’re willing to spend some time with it, you may end up feeling the same.
