INTERVIEW: She Burns Red

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Really good thanks, things are definitely getting back to normal over here, or whatever can be described as normal these days. Gigs are getting busier and it’s getting warmer, which is always good.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Rise and Fall”?

It’s been a long time coming, that’s for sure. We recorded it back in January with Matt Ellis down in England at Axis Studios. Our management and PR have been working extremely hard to get everything just right for its release as we know it’s a really important part of our career as a band. It’s the first with this new line up and as far as I’m concerned it’s the best we have ever sounded. We are all really proud of it.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Well kinda, at the time of writing and recording the news stations were full off the whole “Partygate” scandal. Not that we are particularly a political band I guess I was just pissed off about everyone being blatantly lied too with absolutely zero consequences. But not just politicians, also social media platforms and idiots in general. It’s mostly about standing up for yourself. Not taking any shit from fools.

Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?

The video is done! It’s getting released on the 13th of May along with the single. It was filmed and directed by a really good friend of ours David Stewart and his brother Neil. From walking into the venue we filmed it into the final product. It really is a display of what you can achieve with imagination and talent…..and also four incredibly handsome men. Haha.

How was the recording and writing process?

It was amazing. Matt’s the kind of guy that doesn’t really say much, he’s not completely involved in everything or putting his opinion across all the time but when he does speak you 100% listen, because what he usually ends up saying is genius. It was also the first song we wrote as a band, in fact I think it was nearly 90% complete by our second rehearsal.

What role does Scotland play in your music?

That’s a really good question. I guess in other countries there’s this perception of Scotland being like a Shortbread Tin image, you know like Tartan, Bagpipes and the Loch Ness Monster and all that bullshit. Like every other country we have our problems, unfortunately poverty, poor health and unemployment are rife, I mean I read something the other week that as a young male you have a better life expectancy in Baghdad than parts of Glasgow, that’s just absolutely shocking to me. So in saying that there’s definitely a grit and anger to our music, but it’s not about complaining, it’s about getting up and making things better yourself.

How has the Foo Fighters and Queen of the Stone Age influenced your writing?

Haha. Were you getting those vibes? Yeah a lot, we absolutely love both those bands, I guess we want to have the accessibility of Foo Fighters but still keep a little off the weirdness and heaviness of QOTSA. They aren’t the worst influences to have.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Well we have another two singles done and dusted, which we believe are even better than Rise & Fall, so they will be coming soon. We also have four people in the band who all write so right now we are in the middle of working on new material and trying to figure out what to work on next. We have a little group chat that’s just full of ideas so the biggest problem we have is what gets worked on next, which is a wonderful problem to have.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

I think the next single is late summer/autumn and we are keeping the titles close to chests. You’ll have to just keep checking into our socials….

What else is happening next in She Burns Red’s world?

Well we are about to go on a small British tour with American band Kickin Valentina which culminates at The Call Of The Wild Festival which we are all mega excited about. Rise & Fall is released Friday before the tour starts. Working on new material, lots and lots of shows during the rest of the year then basically World domination.
