1.) We’re happy to be speaking today with one of the most exciting voices on the music scene today, Casey Baer; greetings and salutations, Casey! Before we jump into things, how has your New Year been treating you so far?
Thank you so much for the opportunity to speak with you! So far, 2022 has been amazing! I just released my debut EP “Not That Girl” and next week i’m leaving for a 34 city tour with Jesse McCartney!
2.) Major congratulations are in order for your upcoming April 22 release of your debut EP Not That Girl! With this being your freshman release, do any sort of nerves go along with the grand unveiling of Not That Girl?
Thank you so much! No nerves at all! I’ve been working on this project with my executive producer Sophie Simmons for over a year and I was finally ready and so excited to share it with everyone!
3.) How did Not That Girl come into being? Has it been a long road to get to this point?
‘Not That Girl’ was not the original title of my EP, but when we wrote that song I knew immediately it was going to be the title! It was a long road, but it was the road that helped me define who I am an an artist, which takes time and a lot of songwriting. It definitely shifted from the beginning of the project.
4.) Who was your producer on Not That Girl and what did that collaboration look like?
The title song “Not That Girl” was produced by Jonathan Asperil and Louis Schoorl. It was a great collaboration between Sophie Simmons, myself, “Yoni” and Louis, everyone added their special mark on the song!
5.) What do you hope listeners walk away feeling after giving the new EP a spin?
I hope listeners walk away with a few things. One, a connection to the songs in any way that helps them feel like they are not alone in anything they are going through. Two, empowered to truly be comfortable being themselves and not to worry about how people see them or to try to be someone they are not. And third, to just walk away with enjoyment from listening to the music.
6.) In conjunction with the EP, you also have a lead single from it – Take It Personal – that will see release on the same day, April 22. What made Take It Personal the right single to release in unison with Not That Girl?
When we (Selena Dosan and Alex Veronneau and I) wrote “Take It Personal,” I just felt it was exactly how i was feeling at the time and wanted to scream it with everyone going through a similar situation.
7.) You’re also gearing up for a major coast-to-coast tour with fellow pop star Jesse McCartney. What can you tell fans about this tour?
Yes, I’m so excited to tour with Jesse! I’ve been looking forward to this for a long time and can’t believe it’s finally here. One thing I can say is we have a really fun show and I will be playing a completely unreleased song! It will be a fun high energy show with my guitarist Gray Trainer and my drummer Shep Martin accompanying me.
8.) Out of the six brilliant tracks on the Not That Girl EP, do you have a personal favorite?
Wow, this is a hard one! It’s always so hard for me to pick a favorite because all of my songs are stories about my life, so it makes it hard to pick. At this very moment I’m loving take it personal, cause it feels so good to be over my ex!!
9.) How does your family feel about your success in the music industry?
I am so grateful to my family for being so incredibly supportive of my career! They have always stood by my side and helped me live my dream!
10.) Musically, which artists inspire you?
There are so many artists that inspire me but here’s a few of my favorite: Justin Bieber, Tate Mcrae, Taylor Swift, Rihanna and Elton John.
11.) You grew up in Southern California. How do those roots inform you and your music?
Growing up in southern California definitely was a plus because the industry is so much a part of the culture that I was able to immerse myself in theatre, dance, vocal and musical lessons at an early age. It was very easy to find amazing people that helped me develop my craft.
12.) We’re big fans here of your tune Hollywood Hills. Is there a Secret Origin to this catchy song that you could share with us?
Thank you! I released “Hollywood Hills” during the pandemic, it was the first time I went to a studio and recorded anything in person that year. The song is inspired by growing up in Los Angeles and being part of a friend group that was so competitive. The line “Hollywood Hills have eyes” refers to how people are always watching everything you do. At first I wanted to be part of this group, but when i finally was, I realized I wasn’t happy being with people that were more interested in social climbing than being true friends.
13.) A lot of musicians eventually segue part-time into the world of acting. Looking ahead, and if the part were right, could you see yourself exorcising your acting chops in a film?
Absolutely! Growing up I spent years doing musical theatre and taking acting lessons. I would love to segue into acting, that was always a plan for me.
14.) Final – SILLY! – Question: What one item is always in your refrigerator?
Pickles 😂
