Vibrational Therapy – A Guide to Discovering Balance and Wholeness in Sound

Sound is all around us and it doesn’t just refer to the local hits on the radio. It’s all encompassing, it’s the birds, the purr of an engine, the clicking of keys on a keyboard, it even includes the wailing of a baby.

Although some sounds may give us headaches and cause agitation more than anything else, some sounds have been proven to have beneficial effects on our health.

Enter, vibrational therapy. Vibrational therapy is the therapy of using sounds to help our bodies heal from illness as well as regain balance in a fast-paced world. This article will dive into this therapy and see how it can help us help in our journey toward wellness.

What is it?

Vibrational therapy doesn’t just use any random sound, it uses vibrational sounds to help our bodies regain balance and wellness.

When we listen to relaxing soothing sounds with a vibration, our bodies are affected on a cellular level. The energy given off these vibrational sounds flow through our cells, clearing stagnant energy and allowing us to regain balance.

Our body is 75% water, this makes it a great conductor and able to carry vibrations through our body. When the vibrations pass through our cells it can promote circulation, and energy flow preventing stagnant energy and blockages and can leave us feeling rejuvenated.

Life can be busy and stressful and this can cause the energy in our cells to become stagnant and in the case of illness blocked. By allowing the energy to flow, it shifts us towards balance and can help us deal with stress and potentially prevent mental and physical illness (1).

The Benefits

From a glance, it may seem a bit new-agey however vibrational healing has been around for centuries and was used by the ancient Greeks to cure mental illnesses. It has now been shown to have many health benefits; which include reducing stress, blood pressure, cholesterol, and improving sleep and mental health (1).

The different types

With vibrational therapy, there is a range of different types of vibrational therapy to choose from, so if one doesn’t resonate that’s ok, there are others you can try out.

Tuning Forks

These forks originally were used to tune other instruments and now are being used on their own for healing.

Calibrated tuning forks can be held to specific parts of the body to send vibrations that release tensions and clear blocked energy.

This form of therapy has been found to provide relief from pain and can help you regain emotional balance (2).

Gongs

An ancient instrument that has been around since BC, they are now commonly used in gong baths.

This is a form of meditation where a guide creates different tones and patterns with the gongs to produce vibrations that work on the body and mind connection.

Due to the strong vibrations, gongs can put you in a relaxed state within 60-90 seconds and can help clear fears, remove energy blockages and improve mental clarity (2).

Singing Bowls

Commonly used in meditation and yoga practices, singing bowls have been used in Tibetan culture since the 12th century.

The bowls come in various sizes and will produce a different frequency that will work on separate parts of the brain. Because of this, singing bowls of different sizes and frequencies will be used together.

The bowl can also be placed on various parts of the body to initiate healing. This form of therapy can reduce stress, fatigue, anger, and even depression. So next time when you take your NAC for depression, try listening to a singing bowl session (3).

Solfeggio Frequencies

This was one of the first forms of vibrational therapy I was introduced to and I fell in love with the concept when I was introduced to it.

This therapy uses specific sound patterns to stimulate the brain and helps your brain achieve a frequency that can have many health and healing benefits.

Each solfeggio frequency has a specific purpose and will have different benefits. This is the cool part of it as you can choose what type of frequency you would like to hear based on what you would like to get out of the session.

For example, if you would like to improve your sleep then 963 Hz may be the frequency for you if you would like to let go of guilt and fear then 396 Hz may do the trick (4)(5).

Binaural Beats

This one is normally experienced in headphones and can be used for meditative purposes, improving stress levels, anxiety, relieving pain, and inducing sleep.

The way it works is that each ear listens to a different frequency, your brain then perceives an illusory tone and produces a new frequency which is the difference between the ears.

This new tone is called the binaural beat, it is less than 30 Hz and the tones played to your ears are within the frequency of 1000 Hz (6).

Vocal Toning

If you enjoy singing well then this may be the therapy for you! This therapy uses one steady tone to balance your cells and allow the energy to flow.

It’s intuitive and it’s something we naturally do such as sigh. It is believed that our voice is more powerful than the gong as we are self-generating the healing vibrations to shift energy blocks. It’s the reason why mantas are so powerful, they harness specific tones to release energy (7).

There are seven different tones based on vowels and each of them is aligned with a specific chakra for example the tone ‘ah’ accesses the heart chakra whilst the tone ‘ee’ accesses the crown chakra. by using a specific tone it helps you to access a particular point in your body to heal it (8).

Final Words

If you are looking to improve your health or heal yourself from a specific illness, vibrational therapy may prove to be a useful adjunctive therapy. It may not be the cure for an illness but it may provide you with the relief you’ve been craving.
