Better Call Saul’s final season is about to debut. We’ve already gotten some big news about the season, and that’s the fact that Walter White and Jesse Pinkman, the two main characters from Breaking Bad, will be appearing. They did not hide this fact, as opposed to when they kept Gus Fring a pseudo secret. They didn’t get cute, and I kind of appreciate that. I also am a little leery about Walt and Jesse popping up.
Now, I did not read anything beyond this headline. I am quite spoiler averse. Maybe they are just showing up in one episode. Saul’s story becomes dominates by having Walt and Jesse as clients at a point. You could tell Saul’s story without those two, but only if you basically cut it off before he met the duo that would change his life forever.
I love Breaking Bad, and I also really enjoy Better Call Saul. The only concern I have is Walt and Jesse overshadowing not just Saul, but all the other characters from his show that weren’t in Breaking Bad but have become great characters in their own right. Specifically, Kim Wexler, who is notably absent during the era of Breaking Bad.
Spinoff shows tend to feature appearances by characters from the original show. It tends to only be for one episode, though. I think of Frasier in this regard. When Sam or Diane show up, the episode is all about them. It kind of has to be. Do we get one Better Call Saul episode dedicated to Walt and Jesse? That could be great. I am wary of them creeping into the show a little too much, though.
However, my concern is kept in check because I trust Peter Gould and Vince Gilligan. They nailed the ending of Breaking Bad, and Better Call Saul has been quite the impressive spinoff, in part because it has become its own thing. I don’t think those two want to muddy those waters down the stretch.
