As social media platforms like TikTok continue to push even further into the mainstream, content creators on the app are starting to recognise the importance of not just having appealing visuals to attract viewers but sounds and music as well.
Today, TikTok has an extensive library of songs and sounds that creators use to turn their videos from good to great, a reality that has made the creative world take another look at the use and importance of sounds and music in creating viral and chart-topping entertainment. While TikTok is in a league of its own, it could be argued that, before the social media video app, casinos were the original advocators of how using music can improve the user experience and attract new audiences.
The Original Users Of Sounds And Music
For years, music has been used in numerous games that you would find on an online casino site as it adds to the atmosphere of the game, with Last Chance Saloon being a prime example of this. Music evokes emotions and these emotions can trigger certain decisions. Depending on the genre, the music in casino games will match to get the players in the right mood, and this is the case with both online casino games and at land-based casinos. If the state of gaming is tense, you will enjoy upbeat tunes. Likewise, if the prevailing situation is calm, melodious music and sounds tend to play in the background.
That is something we see on TikTok, where aesthetically pleasing videos, such as time-lapsed ‘study with me’ videos, use relaxing sounds. Sports videos, on the other hand, such as skiing TikToks, use upbeat EDM/hip-hop music to create the desired environment.
Of course, the traditional and online casino industry’s relationship with music extends past just using sounds and music as accompanying background noise. Today, there are dozens of music-themed slot games that are centred around legendary musicians and bands, including Ozzy Osbourne, Jimi Hendrix, Dolly Parton, and Guns N’Roses. In fact, Osbourne, the lead vocalist of Black Sabbath, has been involved in the casino industry for years. He even aligned his brand and reputation with an online casino that is dedicated to heavy metal by becoming the face of the institution.

It’s Not Just Casino Games
In many ways, the video game industry has done something similar. Many video games have used music and sound to create the desired gaming environment. For instance, the soundtrack for the 2020 action-adventure game The Last of Us: Part II did an incredible job of capturing the game’s story. The soundtrack oscillates between peaceful sounds, reflecting on the emptiness of an abandoned world, and violent undertones, a nod to the turmoil that the characters Abby and Ellie find themselves dealing with throughout the game.
Gone are the days of attracting an audience through visuals alone. While TikTok gets much of the mainstream credit for reigniting the importance of sounds and music to create rounded content, it can be argued that casino games and video games were the original advocates for using sounds and music to create the perfect environment for users.
