INTERVIEW: Hior Chronik

We’re super-happy to be speaking today with accomplished musical artist Hior Chronik on the eve of his new album release; welcome to our humble pages, Hior! Before we get the ball rolling, how has your 2022 been treating you thus far?

Hello and thanks a lot for the invitation! Well, we are still in the beginning of the year and things around us remain sad and that makes me feel a bit awkward and I cannot say that I’m really enjoying everything. Personally speaking, I’m fine and no reason to complain about anything so far.

Major congratulations on the upcoming April 8 release of your new album HAZE! How does it feel to be standing at the precipice of a project you’ve poured so much time and effort into?

Thank you so much! It’s always a great feeling seeing your work to be circulated to the general public. With HAZE my feelings are a bit different this time. The music I worked on this album is something I was dreaming to release. You can call it “old fashioned electronic idm music”. That’s the music I was listening to for years when I discovered the sound of Morr music and City Centre Offices. The most beautiful feeling is that KI Records wanted to release this album and I felt double happy cause I really feel this label is very close to me and it’s a kinda family label.

What was the genesis of HAZE, Hior? How did this lovely album come into being?

The truth is that I wanted to make an album less melancholic and dark than my previous works. I think I’m a little bit tired following one destination of feelings every time. HAZE is brighter and happier than anything else I’ve done before. One reason that I felt this way is probably the whole situation that surrounded us in the last period which made us isolated and many people feel depressed not being able to enjoy their life. I was lucky enough to be able to escape in nature with my friends and this helped me to survive mentally speaking. So yes, this is HAZE. The antidote after the virus came.

What do you think fans will be most surprised about with HAZE?

Maybe that I can also create more optimistic sounds haha… I don’t know but I imagine the same surprise as the first release on KI Records which was more dancey and I’m sure nobody expected that. I know that I can confuse and surprise people being ambient, playing the piano, creating Techno and now an IDM glitchy album. But I’m not only one thing and I cannot hide everything I can play. I prefer surprises than another ambient melancholic album to be honest. And at the end, music is one and styles are there to just describe it.

HAZE is coming our way via KI Records. What makes KI the perfect home for Hior Chronik and HAZE?

I admit that my experience with labels I’ve worked in the past wasn’t the best and only with KI Records I felt understanding, support, friendship, and results of my work. In other words, I don’t feel any distance working with KI and that makes me feel happy and freer than ever right now.

Who was your producer on HAZE and what did that collaboration look like?

Myself. I decided that it’s something I can do on my own and it’s the first album that I’m also the producer of the music. I wasn’t so confident in the beginning, but I decided at the end that I wanna take care of it the way I want to.

That was a surprise by myself to myself. The production takes a lot of time cause u must be very gentle and treat every little sound which exists in the track with respect. It took me 2 months to finalise it.

Can you tell us a little about some of the other very talented musicians who contributed to HAZE?

I could speak for a long time for each one of them. In general, the collaboration in all cases met everything that I was dreaming about. Lilla Clara contributed to more songs and with her velvet voice gave more beauty to the compositions. I always liked the way she sings and composes, also her solo tracks and I’m grateful I worked with her, and I hope for more in the near future. Mohna is well known for her great voice, but she also has her own project called Museum of No art, where she plays the clarinet and I thought to ask her to collaborate. Everything happened so easily so I couldn’t be happier. Aparde put his own personal style in singing and I love the way he sings the high notes to the track we did. Christian Grothe, Thistlemorse, and Teamforest completed the rest of the collaboration tracks in the best way.

What are you most proud of in regards to your work on HAZE?

I think I’m proudest that I follow my instinct blind without having any kind of stress about what people will think about the music I make. Not to be misunderstood…I mean that I do what I feel I have to do. I’m proud of the result and also for my collaborations.

Is there a particular song on the HAZE album that really stands out for you?

That’s a hard question but hmm… I would say the first song of the album called ‘Strange Days’. If u ask me how I did that song, I barely remember and I feel like it says it all also by the title. Also, it’s the only track that I recorded playing live in my home studio.

Did the worldwide pandemic in any way inform any of the material from HAZE?

As I mentioned in the beginning, yes totally. Actually, I made all the tracks during the pandemic. I felt that I have plenty of time and a quiet life to start something new. Most of the artists made their album the way I did mine I assume. Sure, I’m not an exception here.

How is HAZE similar to 2017’s Out of the Dust? How is it different?

It’s completely different. Out of the Dust is an ambient – piano album, melancholic and more esoteric. From the other side, HAZE is more pop, happy and optimistic and of course more electronic. The only thing they have in common is me between them 🙂

What do you hope fans walk away feeling after giving HAZE a listen?

That they wanna listen to it again. That could mean that the album gave them the feeling of a good company while listening to it. Metaphorically speaking, a new album it’s like a person u met in one night and u wanna see him/her again. Every person has different needs so it’s hard to speak about other people’s feelings. They will have their own reason to repeat the music they listened.

Can fans look forward to seeing you on tour to promote HAZE?

I hope and I wish but there are no plans yet.

Final – SILLY! – Question: Favorite film about the music scene – Almost Famous or This Is Spinal Tap?

I haven’t seen either of these two. I admit I watched on YouTube the trailers to see what you are talking about. There is a scene to Almost Famous where guys are singing in a bus and a little boy suddenly says “I wanna go, don’t know why? and his girl says “Shhh we are home”. Excellent. (I’m kidding).
