The process of burning is essential during any game of poker. The dealer will place the ‘dead’ cards face down on the table before laying the predetermined number of cards face-up for the game.
The number of cards that they burn is the same as the amount of cards needed for each stage of Texas Hold ‘Em. It ensures objectivity and makes the dealer seem more reliable.
River
This stage is only applicable when there are more than one player left at the table. The dealer will now add a fifth card to the table, followed by the same betting structure which happens in the turn stage of the game.
The dealer burns a card from the pile that they are drawing from, before turning over card number five for all players to see.
Showdown
This is exactly what the name suggests, and the player with the best 5-card poker hand will be the winner at the end of this round. They will therefore win the pot, but need to follow the predetermined structure based on the river stage.
If any player bet on the river stage, they will be the first to reveal their cards. If nobody bet during this stage, then it is the player closest to the dealer on their left to show their cards first.
Players who know that they have lost don’t actually have to reveal their hand if they don’t want to. They can concede the pot and muck their hand.
