What To Binge This Weekend: ‘Miami Vice’

MTV cops. This is, in lore, the pitch that sold Miami Vice. Procedurals make for good binge shows. I feel like the episodic nature and only having hints of ongoing storytelling is actually beneficial in a binge. That’s especially true for shows with a lot of episodes. It allows you to pick and choose more. Does the description of an episode intrigue you? Give it a watch! Sure, maybe you’ll be skipping six or seven episodes, but you’ll be fine.

Magnum P.I. is set in Hawaii. Go with me here. Thomas Magnum is a guest in a palatial estate in the islands, he has a nice car, life seems good. At first, Magnum is indeed living a life of luxury. However, Tom Selleck didn’t want Magnum to have that vibe. He wanted a show more like The Rockford Files. Sure, Magnum still lives on an estate in Hawaii, but now he rarely caught a break, didn’t pick up every woman in sight, and was a bit more hard scrabble.

Miami Vice is all about the style and glamor. Now, it can be a grimy show. Drugs play a bit part in it, after all. The show wants you to think Crockett and Tubbs are super cool, though. They want you to think they dress awesome and have cool cars. Selleck didn’t want you to wish you were Magnum. Miami Vice doesn’t have those concerns.

It has the most sheen of any procedural, but it’s not without bite and substance. Plus, the music is killer. The show is available on Peacock, where you are free to pick and choose episodes to make up a weekend of binge watching. Summer isn’t here quite yet. Why not spend some time in a world full of beaches, boats, and sunshine?
