Ranking Every Episode Of Season 5 Of ’30 Rock’

I’ve actually been watching some 30 Rock recently. Maybe it’s because I’ve been doing these rankings. Doing them I have been feeling like my perception of the show’s quality has dipped. Was I checking in to see if I was mistaken? Or to confirm my current feelings? Perhaps a bit. Mostly, I just needed something to watch. However, I did not watch any episodes from season five, which I am going to be assessing right now. I like to go into these rankings with fresh eyes. Of course, after I’m done here, maybe I’ll go watch a couple of these episodes.

22. “Reaganing”

21. “Brooklyn Without Limits”

20. “College”

19. “When It Rains, It Pours”

18. “Gentleman’s Intermission”

16. “Operation Righteous Cowboy Lightning”

15. “Plan B”

14. “Que Sorpresa”

13. “Everything Sunny All the Time Always”

12. “It’s Never Too Late for Now”

11. “TGS Hates Women”

10. “The Fabian Strategy”

9. “Live Show”

8. “Let’s Stay Together”

7. “I Heart Connecticut”

6. “Mrs. Donaghy”

5. “100”

3. “Queen of Jordan”

2. “Double-Edged Sword”

1. “Christmas Attack Zone”

What do you say about a season of television where every episode is between a B- and a B+? Because that’s what I’m trying to do right now. This is a season of TV lacking peaks and valleys. There are no great episodes, but there are like 10 or 11 that are quite good and several more that are really solid. I can’t complain about that, but it’s harder to write about TV that doesn’t yield strong emotions one way or another.

The 100th episode was fun because 30 Rock got to 100 episodes and good for them. The fake episode of “Queen of Jordan” is clever and a nice one-episode thing. They also did a live episode that was an interesting gimmick but also maybe only sorta funny? One of my favorite bits in 30 Rock is from “I Heart Connecticut” when we see the tween girls on cocaine thanks to Jenna’s dolls. The rest of that episode is middling, though.

There are a couple more seasons of 30 Rock left. Will they lift my assessment of the show back to me considering it an all-time sitcom? Or has this ranking experiment led me to the realization that maybe I am not as high on 30 Rock as I once believed?
