Director Baz Luhrmann’s Rock and Roll Biopic “Elvis” Set to Make World Debut at 2022 Cannes Film Festival

For as influential of a musician as Elvis Presley – the white hot super nova that brought the public at large such classic tunes as Hound Dog, Return to Sender, Love Me Tender, Jailhouse Rock, Love Me, Can’t Help Falling in Love, Devil in Disguise, In the Ghetto, Suspicious Minds, Don’t Be Cruel and That’s Alright Momma – hypothetical film festivals like the Podunk Keg Fest or the Backwoods ‘Deliverance’ Special just won’t cut it when it comes to unveiling to the public at large the latest big screen biopic based off of his celebrated and tumultuous life and career. For that distinct honor, filmmaker Baz Luhrmann (Gatsby, Romeo + Juliet) who directed the forthcoming American epic Elvis turned to the Grand Poobah of movie festivals, the mucho lauded Cannes Film Festival which, once every year, sees folks from the entertainment industry descend upon the French landscape in search of movies to watch, buy, love and hate.

According to our Blue Moon of Kentucky fans over at Variety, Luhrmann and Elvis will be given the royal treatment at the Cannes Film Festival this year, where the eagerly awaited Tom Hanks (as controversial Presley manager Colonel Tom Parker) and Austin Butler (as the titular ‘Elvis’) film will make its world debut.

Elvis is a rock and roll biopic set to depict the life and times of the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley. Along with the usual trappings of such a film, the singer and performer’s oft-times troubled relationship with manager and promoter Col. Tom Parker will be put under the proverbial microscope for examination.

“The film explores the life and music of Elvis Presley, seen through the prism of his complicated relationship with his enigmatic manager, Colonel Tom Parker,” the Cannes Film Festival said in a press release touting the premiere of the film on their shores. “The story delves into the complex dynamic between Presley and Parker spanning over twenty years, from Presley’s rise to fame to his unprecedented stardom, against the backdrop of the evolving cultural landscape and loss of innocence in America. Central to that journey is one of the most significant and influential people in Elvis’s life, Priscilla Presley.”

The Cannes Film Festival will run from May 17-28, 2022.

Elvis is the sort of film that rarely gets made in superhero/action/horror-oriented Hollywood these days, and for that alone all of us here at Vents will be in line on opening day (June 22, 2022) for Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis!
