Hi Emily, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hey, thanks so much for chatting with me! I have been great, I’m super excited about my new release “Kiss Strangers”, and I can’t wait to keep sharing new stuff related to the song over the next few weeks.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Kiss Strangers”?

“Kiss Strangers” is an upbeat, fun and sassy song all about getting strong and moving on! It’s every gal’s new breakup anthem, so If you’re just getting out of a relationship, you don’t need the box of chocolates and ice cream. Just listen to this tune and I promise that you’ll feel empowered.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

This song started with a title, and I always knew what direction I wanted it to go in the moment I thought of it. Thinking back to my dating days, the heartaches and heartbreaks, I wanted to write a song that was still lyrically me, but something that shows how diverse I can be in music. I’ve always been vulnerable in my writing, but this brings out a sassy, fun side of me that my listeners can still relate with.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

The process for the music video is always fun. I love shooting in different, neat locations and being able to really create an image for my music for the listener. The team I work with at Road House Productions is incredible, and it’s always a blast to work with them on my projects. We shot this video in two locations in the Toronto area. The first location that is themed in red is called Cherry Colas, a burlesque and rock bar. The second location that is white and black themed, believe it or not, is someone’s apartment transformed into a nightclub. My favourite part about shooting videos is certainly scoping out the locations.

The single comes off your new album “Stealing Hearts” – what’s the story behind the title?

“Stealing Hearts”, comes from the name of a track off of the album, but the track title comes from how I’d describe my music as an artist. I won’t give away what the actual song is about just yet, but I will tell you what the title means to me and why I chose it for the album title.

In my Instagram biography, it says “Stealing Hearts since 93′,” and this came about because I’ve been singing ever since I was two years old, and from such a young age. I was always singing songs beyond my years, songs with substance and meaning that truly made you feel something. Through my music and writing this is how I’ve conveyed myself as an artist, and this is how this is how I came up with the name, and of course that set me up with a really cool song title to work with.

How was the recording and writing process?

The recording process was fun with this one, because upbeat isn’t something I’ve normally recorded. It’s a super catchy song, and I was certainly dancing my way through the whole process of this one! I wrote this song with two writers David Borys, and Bobbi Smith (The Heels.) This was the first song I had ever written with them, and I knew right away that this one had to be recorded. Our ideas bounced off of each-other so easily, and they really helped me bring this song to life. It’s not often that you connect with people you haven’t written with so well right off the bat, but these two are such a blast to work with!

What role does Ajax play in your music?

Ajax, is my roots and hometown where I grew up on music. It’s where music began for me, and where it all started in my family home.

What aspect of relationships did you get to explore on this record?

“Kiss Strangers” is all about how you feel after the “breakup phase.” You’re done being upset, you’re just spiteful and irritated but ready to move on even if it’s just a rebound because let’s be honest we’ve all had one of those.

Where else did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

I also pulled inspiration on this song from thinking back about not only my relationships but my friends as well, and their emotions on how they dealt with a break-up.

What else is happening next in Emily Clair’s world?

Recently, I just got nominated for Roots Artist or Group of the Year at the Country Music Association of Ontario Awards! I’m really humbled and excited by this, as it’s a huge milestone and accomplishment to be nominated by my peers and industry people.
