For years, people have been asking the question – what’s next? From entertainment to retail to education and even healthcare, there’s nothing we can’t achieve with technology.
According to some, 2022 will be the year when online live entertainment really takes off. Live streaming isn’t new, but it has seen a huge surge in popularity over the last few years. It’s not just sports we can watch live anymore – we can also watch poker tournaments or read a roulette review, experience concerts, enjoy gaming, and much more! Is watching online going to become more popular than watching events in-person? Let’s find out!
Live Podcasts

Just one of the live events you can watch online nowadays is a live podcast.
While many people still enjoy listening to podcasts in audio form, many podcasters are increasingly adding video components to their shows. On a visual level, it allows them to put a face and personality to the sound; on an intellectual level, they can then better explain things like how they solved certain problems or how they made their way through an issue.
It has also been noted that people are increasingly turning to (audio) podcasts instead of television, as they prefer listening over watching TV. It’s easy to listen to a podcast in the background when you are working on other tasks – they don’t need your full attention as television does. It’s not unreasonable to expect that podcasts could grow even more popular than television in the future.
Video Game Live Streams

The next generation of live stream viewers is increasingly interactive. The ability to chat with other viewers and influencers on sites like Twitch and YouTube Gaming, allows fans to interact with their favorite gaming personalities in real-time creating a new form of fan-celebrity interaction. Streamers who play Overwatch or League of Legends, for example, may allow chat participants to voice their characters during gameplay.
It used to be that the only way to game with friends was by visiting their homes, but nowadays players from all over the world can interact and watch each other play without leaving their sofas! The popularity of esports has also risen dramatically in recent years. This is a competitive form of video gaming in which fans all over the world tune in live to watch, and maybe even gamble on, their favorite teams or players.
Online Live Events
To date, we have seen everything from concerts to ballets streamed live and online by artists such as Coldplay, Pink, John Mayer, and many other famous faces. Imagine not having to get dressed up and stand in the cold for hours to watch your favorite bands or singers!
Although there is no denying that people still enjoy going out to watch theatre and events in person, more and more are turning to watch them online paving the way for the rise of live streaming service providers offering live streaming solution. We may even see a time when theatre productions will be made available exclusively for paying audiences around the world through streaming platforms.
How Will Online Streaming Affect Creators and Advertisers?
In a few years, major music festivals could be held exclusively on Netflix. Live sporting events may become available exclusively on Hulu. These possibilities don’t sound all that crazy in an era where more and more consumers are getting their television and music fix via streaming services. They also present a potential problem for creatives, however, who are just looking to make a living from their art.
Do we really want massive sporting events going behind paywalls? Will musicians continue to tour if they can only sell tickets through one platform? One way around these issues is fan-based funding platforms.
Pledging money directly to creators has been popularized by sites like Patreon and Kickstarter. Sites like these allow fans to support creators directly – in return for things like exclusive content or personal interactions with creators – without going through more regimented platforms like Spotify. This means that fans (and creators) can avoid some of those platforms’ rules.
Will Online Live Entertainment be Bigger Than TV in 2022?

At its simplest, live entertainment is any event that is made available for people to view at an agreed time. The internet has changed almost every industry, so it was only a matter of time before online live entertainment became big business.
More and more people have access to a high-speed internet connection at home, meaning accessing these streams in real-time is no longer an issue. Will it take the place of television though? Although it can be expected that online events such as esports and live concerts will only become more and more popular, it’s unlikely that they will completely replace regular, scheduled television programs just yet.
