Partial Sum Release “Just Listen”

“Sometimes, I get lonely and I don’t feel like you know me; I don’t feel like you’re listening to me.” Thus starts Partial Sum’s new hit track “Just Listen,” its opening lyrics painting a very familiar feeling we’ve all been able to relate to. Sung over twinkling electronic pop that gives Ariana Grande as much as it’s giving Charli XCX, Partial Sum has their finger on the pulse of what makes modern pop music work, and they’re using it every bit to their advantage. Throughout this new single, there’s a sense of insight that will bring in audiences both familiar with Partial Sum as well as those new to their music, and the band is ready to deal a new hit single to whoever is ready to “Just Listen.”

Florida-based Partial Sum is the brainchild of Jim Mussio, but his friends and colleagues know him simply as Muz. With their new album New Beginnings on the horizon, “Just Listen” is a knockout of a second single for the group — it continues the pitch-perfect pop sensibilities first hinted at with the group’s initial single, the aptly titled “First In Line,” but brings them to the next level in ways most professional pop stars spend years chasing. Focusing on a deeply relatable lyrical crux helps the pop production settle into itself, as the simple structure gives way to the complexity of the instrumental track that fuels the song below the polished vocals. As airy synths do musical battle with fast-paced pop percussion, “Just Listen” earns its place as a substantive entry into the indie-pop canon.

Clocking in at just under four minutes, there’s plenty of meat for audiences to chew on. “Just Listen” never loses steam, propelled by the nonstop heart of Partial Sum’s songwriting chops. Songwriter Muz’s attention to detail brings a new class of pop to the forefront as he uses the song to balance pop stylings of new and old, instilling a classically vocal-forward pop anthem with enough hyper-pop sensibilities to make it stand out on its own. The general concept is universal enough to sell records, and yet the lyrics feel personal enough to grab anyone by the heartstrings and add it into their playlist rotation.

Being the second song released of eight on the impending album New Beginnings, “Just Listen” is a brilliant choice for the next step forward in the album’s rollout. Furthering Partial Sum’s reach into the pop genre while using the single as a way to showcase Muz’s knack for layered and complex instrumental production allows “Just Listen” to fully flesh itself out as a song worthy of repeat listens. The rich instrumental meshed with finely-tuned vocal harmonies leaves the song ripe for possible remixes and alternate versions; there’s room for a stripped-down version of the track to showcase the powerful vocal performance that propels the song throughout its entirety. Overall, there’s plenty to take away from “Just Listen” even with just a single listen; with a song as textured and detailed as this, though, good luck stopping at one. Partial Sum has a certified hit on their hands, so long as audiences are smart enough to… you got it: “Just Listen.”
