INTERVIEW: LEROYBROUGHTFLOWERS

Leroybroughtflowers, welcome to VENTS! Can you tell us a little about your latest single, Woodlark?

First of all, thank you for this interview and it is really nice to meet you. My song “woodlark” is a coming-of-age ballad I wrote in my room some months ago. I still remember that it was a bit of a lonely night for me when I composed it. To me, the main focus was the lyrical content of the song as the day of me leaving my hometown was getting closer and I wanted to write about that. It is a love letter to leaving and endlessly wandering and also never forgetting your first love and what made you you. It is already out everywhere and you can stream it.

What was it like to explore the darker side of wanderlust?

It never had a strictly positive or  negative side for me. I always thought that this endless desire to travel always comes with some darker spots but also the great privilege of traveling the world. I think that this darker side comes from compromising yourself to always being ready to leave a place even if you have developed some strong relationships there or holding onto your roots hoping that you will grow new branches every place you go. But on the end of the day, you go places, you see many things and traveling the world is something you have to be very lucky to do. I guess the darkness to it comes from loneliness. Making a home for yourself on your own is not the easiest thing to do especially when you already come from a place you’re used to calling home. However those are the things that make us stronger and there is an endless beauty to this whole story, this is why I am forever inspired by wandering and many of my songs touch on this topic.

We’re dying to know, what’s the story behind your artist name?

That’s a good question. As you know, I am a singer but I also rap sometimes. It is not that I am a rapper but I have a specific flow that I like to keep playful and what makes my music special is that blurry line between singing, rapping and mixing many music styles. So, this is what I bring to the table. Some time ago, we were recording some hip hop songs with a friend of mine that is a producer and when I recorded a verse that was very laid-back and chill she said that my flow is like a flower and this kind of stuck with me. Feeling like my music is a bouquet of flowers I carefully handpicked and brought to the world. Hence, leroybroughtflowers.

You seem to be an incredibly prolific songwriter; where do you usually find your inspiration?

I just write about what I feel in the moment. Music to me is like an homage where I celebrate every sound, every song and every artist I feel connected to. I have experimented with many music genres but this is only because I genuinely wanted to do them all and have a specific role while singing every tune. So, my inspiration comes from me being authentic when I want to create something so it doesn’t sound like cosplaying. On a daily basis, I am inspired by nature, human relationships, abstract concepts and growing up. I feel like my art at this very moment is a coming-of-age music.

Does your hometown in Greece have an imprint on your sound?

I think it obviously has. It is not something I observe on every song of mine but I don’t feel like it is something for me to observe. I don’t think that I will ever get to tell where specifically, how or why my hometown has an imprint on my sound but it is just there and it will definitely stay there. There are some things that shape us as humans and as artists that we never fully realize but who knows how we would have been without them.

What is it about jazz that inspires you?

Um many things. I love the improvisation that comes with jazz, the feeling of everything happening in the exact same way only once. It allows you to create with the tools and emotions you have in the moment you perform and this is very beautiful. I can sing you a song and then I can sing you the same song again but I think that it will not be the same song. I mean it will be the same song but I will never get to sing it in the exact same way more than once. There will always be something new to it. I also love the sensuality and intimacy in jazz music. The way the music carries itself throughout the years feels like a folk tale that is spreaded by artist to artist.

What else is in the pipeline for 2022?

I have some songs ready to be released. It is safe to say that many exciting things are ahead of me. Right now, I am mostly experimenting with the R&B genre and I am preparing some EPs and single rollouts. As of now, I am mostly excited for a 90s/ 00s R&B EP I am going to release in a couple of months that is inspired by artists like Busta Rhymes, Aaliyah, Mariah etc and also, an R&B/ Hip Hop mixtape with jazz samples that will be released later this year. There are also many other things coming such as collabs, pop singles and even an acting project that I am really excited for. I also plan on making a small EP with indie ballads like ‘woodlark’ so consider its release as a lead single from an alternative project in a similar music style that will be released soon.
