In the annals of famous rematches between notable personages – Mike Tyson and Buster Douglas, the Philadelphia 76ers and the Boston Celtics, the Cleveland Browns and the Denver Broncos, Randy Meeks and Ghostface – few have been as eagerly anticipated as the one that’s set to reunite two very intimidating creatures of the cinema, King Kong and Godzilla. Perhaps it was all but inevitable: These twin towering monstrosities after all have a longstanding grudge going all the way back to 1962 when director Ishiro Honda first introduced the two in the nigh classic flick King Kong vs. Godzilla. From there it was only a matter of time before they would duke it out again. Enter Adam Wingard’s 2021 effort Godzilla vs. Kong which brought the ultimate feud to a whole new generation of filmgoers. With a final domestic box-office tally of $467.9 million smackers, only a patsy would think that these two monstrosities would never tango again.
Announced by our compatriots over at Bloody Disgusting comes the news that the inevitable sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong is forthcoming to theaters across the globe, with filming of the new battle set to begin in Australia later in 2022. Place your bets, Ladies and Gents!
Of course there are certain perks for furry old Kong and sleek Godzilla to bring their long-running rivalry to the Land Down Under: Bloody disgusting reports (per Variety) that the new film – which is currently untitled – will be the beneficiary of roughly $11.8 million through the good graces of the Australian federal government’s $399 million Location Incentive Program.
This is a “you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours” sort of incentive in that the Aussies anticipate that the shooting of the Godzilla vs. Kong sequel will pump at least $88 million into their own economy by employing over five hundred local cast and crew. Not to be left out in the cold, over seven hundred and fifty locals as extras are expected to be hired on to the new film when it begins rolling later this year.
No official synopsis on the plot for the sequel, although the ending of the 2021 iteration of Godzilla vs. Kong very much left things open, story-wise; King Kong traipsing around Hollow Earth, anyone?
The sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong is yet one more chapter in production shingle Legendary’s so-called MonsterVerse, and we’ll keep everyone posted on any and all updates on this grudge match as soon as we get ‘em!
