“Before We Die” Picked Up By Channel 4 for Second Season

When Channel 4 dropped the first episode of the hit British crime thriller Before We Die last May, one wonders if they had even any inkling about the rapturous fan response which would soon follow. From far and wide, viewers and critics alike were united in their praise of the new show – which itself is based off of a popular Swedish iteration – and it seemed all but inevitable that fans would be treated to a second season. That assumption was confirmed today from our friends over at Variety, who revealed that a sophomore outing was officially greenlit by Channel 4.

For those out of the loop, Before We Die is about a Detective called Hannah Laing (the resplendent actress Lesley Sharp) who is embroiled in a relationship with a co-worker who also happens to be a married man. After he goes missing, she sets out on a quest to uncover precisely what happened to him. Her search leads her onto the trail of the quite dangerous Mimica family and, as the puzzle of her lover’s disappearance becomes clearer, the stakes become life and death for her.

With a second season now approved and ready to go before cameras, what can fans of season one expect, exactly? The good people of Eagle Eye Drama which produces this adaptation has let out the tiniest slivers of information for the new season, revealing that Sharp’s character will lock horns with the dreaded Mimica family in the form of matriarch Dubravka (a role essayed by master thespian Kazia Pelka).

“I’m delighted to welcome back this gripping crime thriller to the channel,” Channel 4 Head of Drama Caroline Hollick said in a statement. “Series 1 struck a chord with audiences, with over 12 million viewers tuned into the show on All 4 – from the edge of their seats. I can’t wait for audiences to enter back into this world – with more surprises, twists and turns in store and I’m delighted to have Lesley Sharp back at the helm playing the formidable Hannah Laing, along with the rest of our brilliant cast.”

As Hollick noted, Before We Die has endeared itself to a largely British audience, leaving some to ask when might the U.S. and other parts of the world be allowed into this twisty mystery series; According to word ‘round campfire, the U.S. can look forward to deep-diving into the mystery on PBS starting March 20. Make sure you bring your sleuthing kits!
