It’s all too easy for parents to purchase inappropriate school shoes for the young school girl; but what exactly is an appropriate school shoe?
School shoes for girls are not only about being comfortable, and long-lasting.
It may seem absurd that a simple shoe can make such a stir, but a lot of schools are enforcing strict rules on the shoes your children are allowed to wear. This is made even more difficult when popular brands such as Nike, Vans, Converse, Kickers, and others create shoes that may or may not comply with school standards.
It’s easy to trust what high-street merchants tell us: they may tell you that all the shoes in their Back to School collections will meet the criteria. However, each institution has its own standards.
Traditional ‘sensible’ brogues, Mary Janes, and T-bar designs are popular and girls love their brogues. Many youngsters will insist on chunky shoes with DM-style soles or all-black childrens trainers, though always check with your school regulations on what your daughter is allowed to wear.

So, what if my child shows up putting on the “wrong” shoes?
This situation is usually handled differently by different schools. According to the Department of Education, “Teachers can reprimand children for infringing the school’s standards on appearance or uniform.”
It falls on the headteacher or someone assigned by the headteacher to send a pupil back home for the meantime whenever they violate the school’s regulations on uniform or appearance. If the kid continues to break uniform regulations in such a way that he is sent home, or if the pupil takes longer than is strictly required to achieve the change, the absence of the student may be taken as an unauthorised absence.
In a situation where the school decides to expel a student for violating the uniform rules, it must do so in accordance with the law.
The issue is that it may not be acceptable to the school even though your child likes them.
So, how do you pick the right pair of shoes?
The best thing to do is to consult the school’s policies rather than other children’s footwear. Any information on school shoes for girls should be read carefully. If there’s no mention of childrens trainers, kickers, or Vans, they’re probably not allowed.
Due to so much paper, emails, and messages coming from school, it’s possible to overlook something. A visual checklist, however, is not available at every school. Some will just indicate, “appropriate black shoes.”
So, what qualifies as appropriate? Consider plain black. There are no logos, stripes, canvas, or trainer styles that may be deemed exceptions to the rule.
According to the CWB, there are some caveats to consider when choosing footwear for school-age girls.
- Feet may be dissimilar in size, that is one foot from the other. When measuring the size, cater for both feet and choose a size based on the larger foot.
- Don’t choose a size based on a gauge without a qualified shoe fitter to check the fitting. No pairs of shoes or feet are the same so parents must ask a pro to check the correct shoe shape for the child.
- Poorly fitted footwear can cause discomfort in your child’s day to day activities. One point to stay aware of is that your kid has growth spurts. The feet sizes need checking every 4 weeks as an infant, and 8 weeks to 12 weeks when at school.
- Check the shoe has a lace, buckle or hook for easy adjustment across the instep for those finer adjustments if needed. This will prevent shoes slipping off when kids claw their toes if wearing slip-ons.
