What is an industrial safe?

Safes allow you to protect your valuables against theft and damage.

Whilst a home safe is used to keep personal possessions secure in the house, industrial safes are installed at warehouses, factories, distribution centres, manufacturing plants, and offices. They safeguard everything from documents to keys, large sums of cash, and sometimes even weapons.

Types of industrial safe

Choosing an industrial safe can be tricky – especially as there are several types available on the market today.

Depending on the level of security required, the type of property that the safe will be installed in, and whether there is an office on-site, you may need one (or more) of the following industrial safes:

  • Data safes – need to store electronic data? Whether it be hard drives or USB sticks, a data safe will prevent media from being burned and destroyed for either 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes, depending on its fire rating.

Data safes are fitted with a high-security lock on the outside, which helps to protect important data against theft.

  • Floor safes – exactly as their name implies, floor safes are bolted to the ground and hidden out of sight of opportunists. Not only are these safes difficult to spot and access, but they also offer excellent security and fire protection.

Their only downside is they aren’t water-resistant, which isn’t ideal if your property has sprinklers installed.

  • Key cabinets – most large industrial properties have hundreds of keys for store cupboards, gates, lockers, vehicles, etc. Many also have duplicate copies. Having a key cabinet (also known as a key safe) will prevent them from going missing and allow you to control access within staff-only areas.

With enough room to store more than 500 keys, there’s a key safe to suit every business.

  • Gun safes – industries that possess one or more firearms are legally required to store them securely, ideally in a police-approved gun safe or cabinet. The type of safe and the number of guns you can store depends on how big they are.

Some gun safes also incorporate a separate compartment for ammunition – allowing you to keep everything together in one place.

Types of locking mechanism

On top of deciding which type of safe you need for your industrial premises, you also need to consider which type of lock would best suit your security needs.

Below are some of the most common lock options:

  • Key locks – if you only need a basic level of security, key locking safes are a brilliant choice. Super easy to use, you simply turn the key to lock and unlock the door when adding or removing items.

Whilst key locking safes are a cost-effective investment for industries and homeowners alike, there’s always the risk of losing or misplacing the key, leaving the safe and its contents vulnerable to threats.

  • Electronic locks – instead of using a key to gain access, you enter a numerical code with electronic keypads (or digital locks).

You can change the code as often as you like to maximise security. However, it’s important to inform the relevant personnel and ensure that nobody shares the PIN with unauthorised individuals.

  • Biometric locks – rubbish at remembering codes? Constantly forgetting your keys? A biometric locking safe is perfect, as you simply need to place your finger on the scanner.

Fingerprint locking safes provide a higher level of security and eliminate the risk of compromised keys, codes, and passwords – making them a safe investment for your industry.

  • Dual locks – safes with dual locks are also ideal for industrial environments where numerous people need access to the contents inside a safe.

These don’t have one, but two, locking mechanisms – usually a key and combination lock – to keep the items held in the safe secure.
