INTERVIEW | R&B singer Devinn Le’Raay on the importance of “Facetime”

Coming from St. Louis, Devinn Le’Raay specializes in smooth and sultry R&B ballads. For his latest track “Facetime”, he’s teamed up with the one and only Lakes The Voice. VENTS recently interviewed Devinn Le’Raay and you can read that conversation below.

Could you tell us a little bit about your musical journey? How and when did you first start writing songs?

My musical journey was a little different from others. I originally found my voice for music in church as a kid. By the age of 7, I would be asked to sing solos in front of the church. While others would probably have leaned into music. I went another route, and began to play baseball and fell in love. As far as songwriting, I attempted to first write a song while on a tour in Afghanistan for the Army. Me and my friends started playing around with songs but nothing serious. It wasn’t until I was inspired by a friend of mine who performed at a showcase in St. Louis, which made me want to really dive in and do it.

What drew you to the R&B genre? Who are some of your influences?

R&B is in my blood. Funny story: my mother actually used to be in a group. I feel like I am influenced by a wide range of artists. Teddy Pendergrass, Marvin Gaye, and even Maxwell.

What motivates you to create each day? What are some of your goals?

I consider myself as a true creative. I am a painter as well as a musical artist. The idea of me reaching my full potential motivates me every day. One of my goals is to perform in a country where English isn’t their first language and they are singing my songs word for word.

How did you create the concept for “Facetime”? What makes this track unique from your discography?

The concept of “Facetime” could be interpreted a few different ways. Could be a Facetime call, Could be some Face-to-Face time, or it could be some ummmmmm FaceTime. Hahaha. This song has a perfect sexy but cool R&B feel. This song is also relatable from different aspects.

What was the experience of shooting the music video for “Facetime”?

The “FaceTime” video was a dope experience. My best friend/manager directed the video and everyone who worked on the video was from my hometown. The goal was to deliver a great product that everyone involved would be proud of. I hope everyone enjoys the video and maybe you need some FaceTime with a special someone.
