“Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul” Stalwart Giancarlo Esposito Tapped to Lead New AMC Series “The Driver”

Actor Giancarlo Esposito captivated audiences with his sinisterly sly turn as Gus Fring in AMC’s Breaking Bad and its prequel series Better Call Saul. Esposito’s Big Bad in those shows was not your typical and stereotypical one-dimensional baddie. Rather, the Denmark native injected all sorts of nuance and shades into Walter White’s unlikely arch-nemesis, so much so that he won a coveted Best Supporting Actor award from the Critics’ Choice Television Awards. With Better Call Saul heading to its conclusion, and not being one to rest too long on his laurels, it was announced by our pals over at Variety that Esposito is moving up to headline status in an all-new series set to debut on AMC and AMC Plus in 2023.

The Driver is a new and upcoming series from AMC set to star Giancarlo Esposito. The story – based off of a U.K. series of the same name – follows a taxi cab driver (a role to be essayed by Esposito) whose entire life goes into tumult after he decides to chauffer a very nasty individual with a reputation for such nefarious dealings as ruthlessly exploiting illegal immigrants at U.S. southern ports.

In a press release announcing his new role, Esposito – who will also serve as a producer on the show – said that he was “over the moon excited, enthused, and inspired to be in collaboration with the stellar network and creative team of AMC! Thanks for believing in me. It’s great to be back home!”

Danny Brockelhurst – who created The Driver for the U.K. – is on hand developing this new iteration for American audiences alongside cohort Sunu Gonera.

“Giancarlo is a singular talent who is already beloved by AMC viewers through his standout performances in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul,” Dan McDermott, Big Wheel and President of Entertainment over at AMC said in his own statement. “We are excited to be continuing his relationship with AMC and AMC+ in a series built around him and an unforgettable character who takes what he thinks is a straightforward job opportunity and finds himself confronted with a world that tests him in ways he could never have imagined.”

As big fans of Mr. Esposito here at Vents, we couldn’t be happier to welcome one of the best actors currently on the scene back to AMC. Buckle up, everybody: It’s going to be a fun ride!
