“Meg 2: The Trench” Bites Into Three New Cast Members

At one point in time, the end-all and beat-all of shark films belonged to legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg and his Moby Dick reimagining Jaws. Other than the occasional and ill-advised sequel to that 1975 game-changing film, Hollywood pretty much steered clear of that exclusive niche reasoning, perhaps rightly, that Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss and Robert Shaw flick could not be bettered. That sound logic faltered slightly in director Renny Harlin’s 1999 cheese fest Deep Blue Sea which scored a cool $165 million at the box-office for its computer generated troubles. Like a great white shark sniffing blood, the entertainment industry sat up and took notice of that considerable haul of cash and faster than you can say “sell out” they began commissioning a lot of films that dealt with man’s battle with oversized fish. Some were downright brilliant (looking at you here, Open Water) while others like Sharknado merely scratched the cheesy bone inherent in most everyone. Somewhere among the myriad of shark flicks which have caught moviegoers attention over the last handful of years is the Jason Statham 2018 curio The Meg which dealt with a Big Gulp-sized prehistoric shark with a real mad on for a stranded submarine. A box-office smash, Warner Bros. has greenlit a sequel which is just now filling up its actor dance card quite nicely, according to our Farewell And Adieu Fair Spanish Ladies fans over at The Hollywood Reporter.

Jason Statham has signed on to return for Meg 2: The Trench and he’s bringing a talented group of thespians along for the rollercoaster ride: Sienna Guillory (Resident Evil: Retribution), Skyler Samuels (Public Disturbance) and Sergio Peris-Mencheta (Rambo: Last Blood) are the lucky trio who have signed on for the fast-tracked sequel. Also returning from the original film to try their luck yet again are Cliff Curtis, Shuya Sophia Cai and Page Kennedy.

No precise word on a plot, but c’mon Dear and Constant Reader, the name of the flick is Meg 2: The Trench; that’s about all the information I need to know to get me into the front row of a movie theatre on opening day.

Directing Meg 2 from a script by scribes Jon and Erich Hoeber is Ben Wheatley of Free Fire fame who is currently lensing the sequel in the United Kingdom.

No release date has been set as of yet for Meg 2: The Trench, but you better bet your floating replica of Robert Shaw’s The Orca that we’ll keep you posted on this one!
