What is an Oni Mask?
Oni is a kind of yōkai, demon, ogre, or troll in Japanese folklore. They are typically portrayed as hulking figures with one or more horns growing out of their heads. Stereotypically, they are conceived of as red or blue-colored, wearing loincloths of tiger pelt and carrying iron kanabō clubs.
What Does Oni Mask Symbolize?
An Oni mask is used in Japanese culture and is a common tattoo choice for those who believe in good and evil forces and different powers that surround us. The oni mask can be made from wood, paper, leather, or plastic. The material chosen often depends on what the festival will be used for. If it is to be worn at home, then leather would be the preferred material. Children usually wear paper masks during special events such as festivals or birthday parties. Leather masks are usually used by adults during carnivals or parades.
Japanese Oni Mask Tradition
The oni mask has a long history in Japan, used in festivals and rituals to symbolize evil or wicked thoughts and desires. Over time, the Oni has come to represent all things frightening, grotesque, and cruel. These days, oni masks are most common during the Bean-Throwing Festival, also known as Setsubun, when people wear them for festival performances at shrines.
The Setsubun Festival is a Buddhist custom to drive away evil spirits and disease. People believe that Oni (demons or trolls) will invade homes and bring bad luck during the festival. People throw roasted soybeans out of their homes to ward off these demons and yell, “Oni wa Soto! Fuku wa Uchi!” which means “Demons out! Luck in!”.
How to wear a Japanese Oni Mask?
The best way to wear a Japanese Oni mask is with a kimono. The kimono is the traditional dress in Japan. It can be worn by men, women, and children. They are made from a variety of materials, such as silk, wool, linen, and cotton. You can get them from your local department store or dress shop.
If you do not have a kimono, then you can use anything that is comfortable. This can include a t-shirt or even a tank top. Make sure that you are wearing something that is easy to remove if you need to stop for any reason.
