PBS Renews Period Thriller “Vienna Blood” for a Third Season

When author and clinical psychologist Frank Tallis began his loving task of bringing to life the Lieberman Papers – the award-winning series of books about early 1900s ace crime sleuth Max Liebermann – little could he have guessed just how quickly this charming and suspenseful throwback to the so-called “simpler times” would capture the imagination of the public at large. To that end, there have been two successful seasons from PBS which have adapted the novels under the moniker of Vienna Blood and, to no one’s surprise yet to everyone’s relief, the show has officially been given the coveted go-ahead to forge forth with even more mysteries for a third season, according to our Inspector Rheinhardt fans over at The Hollywood Reporter.

PBS’s adaptation of the Tallis Max Liebermann novels has been deftly reimagined for the small screen as Vienna Blood by British scribe Stephen Thompson and has taken the basic ingredients which make the novels work so very well (the team-up between Liebermann and Inspector Rheinhardt in order to solve crimes) and parlayed the past two seasons into genuine Must See TV. Part of the charm comes in the pitch-perfect casting of Matthew Beard as ever-reliable headshrinker and mystery solver Max Liebermann and his cohort Juergen Maurer who essays the role of Inspector Rheinhardt; for many viewers these two thespians are the characters from the books; Full-stop.

In a press release announcing the renewal of the series, producer Jez Swimer said that Vienna Blood’s fabulous combination of mystery, crime, the odd couple pairing of Matthew Beard’s psychiatrist Max Liebermann and Juergen Maurer’s Inspector Rheinhardt, and sumptuous 1907 Vienna has captivated viewers around the world. We are excited to deliver a new series of compelling stories to its growing global fanbase.”

For those died-in-the-wool fans of Vienna Blood that might fret over what’s to come for a third season, be of good cheer: The new stories will have a familiar guiding hand courtesy of Robert Dornhelm of Anne Frank: The Whole Story fame who was the lead director rom the first two seasons of the series. Dornhelm has been noted from Tallis aficionados as being very in tune with the spirit of the novels.

So break out the party favors and grab your deerstalker hat and accompanying magnifying lens; Vienna Blood will be returning in 2022 and we’ll keep everyone posted on any and all updates as we receive ‘em!
