Iconic Director Francis Ford Coppola Set to Drop $120 Million of His Own Money on Upcoming Film

There are few living directors that invoke the sort of hushed awe in cinephiles as Francis Ford Coppola. Since this stalwart Detroit, Michigan native first nestled into a director’s chair, we as an audience have come to expect the unexpected from his artistic sensibilities: The Godfather, The Godfather II, Gardens of Stone, Peggy Sue Got Married, The Conversation, Apocalypse Now, Rumble Fish, The Cotton Club, Tucker: The Man and His Dream and Bram Stoker’s Dracula are but a mere drop in the bucket of this auteurs filmography and, yes, I’d even include The Godfather III to the above hallowed list; as a filmmaker, Coppola is just that damn good. Like his contemporaries Martin Scorsese, Brian De Palma, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and Woody Allen, this maestro has nothing left to prove to anyone and it would be easily forgiven and understood if he just handed over the directing reins altogether to his daughter Sophia (a talented director in her own right) and spent the remainder of his days happily bottling wine. Happily for us selfish movie fans, however, Coppola has no such intention and has declared his next project will be a real doozy and one he’s prepared to drop a lot of his own money on, according to our Distant Vision pals over at Variety.

Declaring his indifference to “the financial impact” his new film might incur, legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola announced his intentions to launch the movie Megalopolis with his very own money to the jaw-dropping tune of $120 million smackers.

Written by Coppola in the early days of the 1980s, Megalopolis is described by those wags over at GQ as “a love story that is also a philosophical investigation of the nature of man.” Apparently, the Rainmaker director believes enough in this passion project that not only is he putting up that astronomical amount of money to get the cameras rolling, but he has already sold off a considerable part of his vaunted wine efforts in order to use a percentage of that sale as collateral for a needed line of credit to get this project finished. Ladies and gentlemen, that is a love of filmmaking that surpasses any and all superhero or computer animated trifle that regularly besieges our local movie houses.

Although no production start date has been set as of yet, Megalopolis is very much happening and we’re anxious to give it as much ink as is possible once more details are known! Stay tuned and go check out Godfather III while awaiting this new flick: Its aged better than you might think!
