“Lord of the Rings” Poised to Become Anime Movie for 2024

If you’ve long appreciated and been a fan of Japanese animation – also known far and wide as “Anime” – and enjoyed the Anime offerings of Space Pirate Captain Harlock, Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon or Neon Genesis Evangelion, then the news from our Middle Earth fanatics over at The Hollywood Reporter of an upcoming Anime-styles Lord of the Rings feature film might just come as a brilliant reason to celebrate.

Set to premiere in movie theaters across the globe in 2024, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim marks the first time that J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy masterpiece will receive the popular Anime treatment courtesy of Warner Bros. Animation and New Line Films. The film is expected to be a stand-alone endeavor.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is a deep-dive into the story of the fortress of Helm’s Deep and, in order to keep the continuity somewhat tidy, will take place chronologically hundreds of years prior to director Peter Jackson’s celebrated Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. Incidentally, for those that like to connect the dots, that 2002 film featured an extended battle scene that took place smack dab at the heart of the fortress that the Anime film will focus on. Rohirrim will also explore the tragedy drenched times of the mighty king of Rohan, Helm Hammerhand.

The director of The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim will be none other than legendary filmmaker Kenji Kamiyama who astute fans might recall from such favorite movies as Blade Runner: Black Lotus and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Of course behind every good director is a solid script and in that regard Kamiyama is in good hands: Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou did the writing honors on this flick which itself is based off a story by scribes Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance fame.

The Lord of the Rings is the proverbial gift that keeps on giving to Hollywood’s ever-important financial bottom line: On top of the news of this Anime endeavor, a television prequel from Amazon, Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power – being touted as the most expensive television show ever created at a budget of – YOWZA! – $1 billion, is forthcoming.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim charges into movie houses worldwide on April 12, 2024.
