Bay Area Hip-Hop has a rich history: Mobb, its first notable movement, was founded in the 80s as a sub-cousin of G-Funk and a strong cousin from the north. The reduced, low-key funk sound was created by acts such as Too Short, JT The Bigga Figga, Dru Down, and many more you can count. In the 2000s, we found a full hyphy movement that was more focused on the party than the previous one. Hyphy was inspired by the increasing use of ecstasy, (this if you are from Bay) and was noted for its productive, bass-heavy production, and words that could sometimes be described as fun. The organization was led by the late, and often performed by Mac Dre, and was famous for artists like Mistah F.A.B, as well as crowds holding overs like E-40 and Keak Da Sneak among others. The current climate of the Bay can be considered a result of the marriage between the two, although it incorporates influences from all over, as the internet makes regional meetings a bit more binding.
The Bay Area is a proud region, providing a wide range of music genres throughout the decades. It is also a region with a heavy chip on its shoulder due to the perceived lack of recognition for its role in popular culture, whether due to its fictional slang, dance moves, or sound.
Dub p grew up in Hayward California in the Bay Area where gang violence was rampant in his neighborhood and he was caught by it as a child. His older brother was killed while they were both in high school and in all of that he found himself in trouble because the law was coming in and out of prison. He loved music when he first heard Tupac on the radio and felt like he was the first Asian rapper to blow up. He started recording music at the age of 8 with his older cousins and brother. At the age of 20, he was charged with felony criminal mischief for firing on a sculpture with a criminal charge. He took a 7-year leave of absence and in 2016 started raping and taking it seriously. In his first year he had a hit song with Corryna with the song “ALONE”. His name started to spread and he began to thunder especially in his hometown. Since then he has had 5 million songs all over the world and still releases record-breaking records. He is far from where he wants to be but he knows exactly where he is going.
