Weekend Movie Recommendations: 1997 Edition

For this week’s movie recommendations, I decided to look solely at films from 1997 that are on HBO Max right now. They are all celebrating their 25th anniversaries this year, and there are a few movies from 1997 on HBO that are worth watching. Celebrate their anniversary with an evening of movie viewing.

There were two movies I definitely wanted to include. Finding the third was a little trickier. Mouse Hunt is family friendly, but is it any good? I haven’t seen it since 1997, and I was a child then. Speed 2: Cruise Control is goofy as all get out, but is it fun enough in its badness? The Lost World is a long film, so while it’s OK it takes up a big chunk of the evening. I liked Vegas Vacation a lot as a kid, but I think it’s bad now. You know, just watch Mouse Hunt. Especially if you are going to be watching the first movie with kids.

Don’t keep the kids around for my second movie, Jackie Brown. It’s a great movie from Quentin Tarantino based on an Elmore Leonard novel. Pam Grier is great. So is Robert Forster. If you haven’t seen Jackie Brown, definitely give it a watch. It’s also not that violent by Tarantino standards, if you are squeamish.

Then, we end with Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. The sequels just do the same jokes, but worse. The first film, though, is just a delight. Austin Powers was sharp and clever at the time. It’s a delightful parody of the bloated era of Bond films. Granted, that’s a bygone era now. Daniel Craig’s Bond has nothing in common with Austin Powers. That doesn’t make the movie any less funny, though.
