“Leading Edge Personal Trainers Emphasize Corrective and Functional Exercise”

Many of us typically do not give much thought to our daily movements and posture, but these are features of our physical health that are more important than we think.  Research suggests that musculoskeletal pain is more common now than it was 50 years ago.  This could be linked to many people now having a more sedentary lifestyle, and not moving enough can be just as detrimental as moving poorly.  It could also be caused by poor movement quality repeated over extended periods of time and can often lead to injuries.  Some muscular imbalances can also be caused by overtraining certain muscle groups and undertraining others.  Habits such as these can lead to sporadic or even chronic pain.  How can we correct these imbalances?

Leading Edge Personal Trainers have a truly collective approach to health and wellness.  They offer private in-person sessions and virtual personal training sessions that also incorporate body and postural assessments and nutritional guidance.  To address and remedy musculoskeletal issues, Leading Edge emphasizes the importance of “Corrective and Functional Exercise.”  This involves specific movements and exercise strategies:  optimizing movement quality, improving functional movements, and looking at the body as a movement system.  The end goal is integrated dynamic movement, which involves the total body (lower, core, and upper) working together but each part having its own coordinated responsibilities.  This will work to enhance the functional capacity of the human movement system.  Being “Functionally Fit” means being strong, flexible, and conditioned enough to perform daily tasks and basic movement patterns like squatting, hinging, rotating, and reaching overhead with anatomically correct body positioning.  Based on this definition, a functional fitness program for a 20 year-old athlete should look very different to that of a 35 year-old lawyer or doctor, because their required daily tasks are very different. However, being able to squat, hinge, rotate, and reach overhead should be a priority in any functional fitness program.

Leading Edge Personal Trainers LLC is a black-owned NYC based family business launched back in 2008 by Kern and Noelle McKenzie Alexander. They care most about the success of their clients and making sure their clients’ best interests are at the heart of every Leading Edge training program. Over the years, Leading Edge trainers have helped hundreds if not thousands of people become more confident in their bodies and what they can do. Leading Edge instills mindful healthy habits and a personalized progressive exercise training program that transcends what their clients do in the gym to further enrich their day to day lives. The goal of Leading Edge is to have every client improve his/her quality of life while also boosting his/her relationship with health and fitness. Nobody should have to suffer with chronic pain, and thankfully, Leading Edge has been able to help so many clients live pain-free.

As a part of Leading Edge’s completely customizable programs, one of their main priorities is body awareness.  They focus on form first starting with a postural assessment of clients and corrective/mobility work first to get them moving better before progressing to loaded exercises. This ensures clients will not only look better but can live a pain-free better quality of life without physical ailments.  Many people are guilty of slouching when they are sitting or standing, but most are not even aware of it.  There is a proper body posture for sitting, standing, lifting, and even sleeping.  Poor posture can lead to many problematic issues:   knee, hip, shoulder, pelvic, and neck pain; arthritis; it can hinder digestion and even cause headaches; it can disrupt your ability to concentrate and move efficiently; and it can interfere with your quality of sleep and even quality of life.  This is why Leading Edge takes a proactive approach right from the start to assess and correct any postural issues, so clients can practice proper form not only in their workouts, but also in their everyday lives.
