INTERVIEW: Canadian Singer/Songwriter Olivia Wik

Hi Olivia, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I’m doing well, thanks for asking! I’ve been busy with the release of my single, but it’s the good kind of busy.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Let’s Dance?”

“Let’s Dance” has been living on my musical back burner for almost 4 years. I wrote it in late 2017, recorded it in the summer of 2019, and am only now releasing it. I think I was a bit embarrassed to release it because it’s a little on the risqué side, but it’s such a good song and I knew I had to share it with the world – and I’m really happy that I did.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

This song is one of those rare moments where it came to me almost fully formed. I started singing the chorus melody, and then it came flooding in my mind all at once. It sounds a bit mythic to say that I knew what I had to write and how it had to sound before I even put my pen to paper, but that’s truly what happened.

Any plans to release any sort of video for the track?

I have a lyric video that accompanies “Let’s Dance” that’s up on YouTube, but if I have the opportunity to film a full music video, that would be amazing. I think it would be really fun to film one for this song too! I’ve already had people asking me about it and I’d love to deliver one if given the chance.

How was the recording and writing process?

The writing process for “Let’s Dance” was much different from how I’ve written songs in the past. Like I said, it seemed to hit me all at once, and I think I wrote it all in about half an hour or so.

I write all of my songs on guitar, but for “Let’s Dance”, I wanted to write to a bassline because that’s what I initially heard in my head. So, I found a few notes on the low E string on my guitar and made a makeshift bassline for me to write to.

I recorded a little voice memo of me singing on top of that bassline, and eventually sent it to my producers, Brandon Unis and Brad Simons. I told them the general vibe that I wanted to go for, gave them some references, and then was surprised with a beautiful track all ready to go when I met up with them. They played me what they already had and it was exactly what I was hoping for. The track instantly gave the song life!

What role does Edmonton play in your music?

Living in a city that isn’t known as a musical hub can be challenging, but there is a beautiful community of artists that live here. I think that’s a really unique trait that Edmonton has. The arts scene is so supportive of each other. I’ve met incredible writers, singers, and producers here that have all given me inspiration in one way or another. That makes me want to give to the other artists and songwriters in my community too. Everyone here is just so kind, and it makes you want to keep the cycle of kindness going.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yes! I have some stuff in the works and am planning on releasing some new music in the next few months. I’m working with a fantastic producer from Finland to create a song that’s a pretty big departure genre-wise from “Let’s Dance”. But I’m excited to dip my toes into the waters of dance pop!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

I don’t have a release date yet but I do have a title! It’s called “Write Me in It.” I wrote it with a group of writers and producers when I was in a song camp in Finland quite a few years ago. It was a great time and the song has always been one of my favourites in my catalogue.

What else is happening next in Olivia Wik’s world?

I feel like I live a double life sometimes! I have had a whirlwind start to 2022 with a song I co-wrote being entered into the New European Song Book, the release of “Let’s Dance”, and now planning another release soon. But in my “real life” I don’t have much going on. So, in reality, I’m probably hanging out with my cat as I think about my next release.
