Small moving and packing strategies

Tips for moving forward on a budget-a guide to packing and transportation costs

In 2022, I launched a series of five moves over the next three years. Three of the trips were local and two were cross-country. During this time, I learned a lot about relocation. I also learned a lot about how to save money when moving home. Many costs are inevitable, but there are many ways to keep costs down by planning ahead, shopping, and revisiting your travel options and cost assumptions.

Change address

As soon as you know your new mailing address, go to shipsmart.com and set up your email forwarding. You can also specify the exact date to start forwarding mail.

There are three reasons to do this

This can cause important emails to be returned to the sender, or worse, opened or ejected by someone who moves to an old home or inherits an old mailbox. The postal service provides some great tips and advice for navigating their site. You can get great information by setting the forwarding address. Once you complete your change of address, you’ll be able to apply for helpful coupons and discounts through the Postal Service’s website.

DIY on the move vs. hiring professionals

For most of my adult life, I avoided hiring professional Small Movers, instead of relying on friends and family to help with relocation. In recent years, however, I have become a huge advocate of hiring professional movers for six specific reasons:

They’re fast If you’re worried about time, hiring professional movers makes a lot of sense. Friends and family may mean well, but in my experience, they can make a change that takes much longer than necessary. Professionals know how to get people moving quickly and efficiently.

They appear at the same time. It can be difficult to get friends and family to coordinate your schedules. This means that you may have to settle for completing your move in turns. Again, this takes time that you could use to work, unpack, or complete other projects. They bring a truck. Even if it’s a local move, they’ll bring the right size van for your move, so you don’t waste time going back and forth between your old and new homes.

They bring tools for Small Moves companies will bring carts, hand tools, and other things that make moving easier, without waiting for your cousin to go to the hardware store for a screwdriver so they can take apart the shel1ves.

They don’t break as many things. Not only are professional movers more likely than hobbyists to know how to protect your belongings during a move, but you also won’t have to deal with any post-move fumbling if one of them manages to drop your grandmother’s antique mirror.

You do not have to feed them. It’s polite to feed friends and family when helping you move. If your move is staged, you will need to provide multiple meals. The cost of these meals adds up, so be sure to consider these complimentary meals when comparing the cost of professional movers versus a DIY job.

How to save on common moving expenses

Moving costs will be added. Often, the best way to keep these costs down is to shop in advance for sale, compare quotes, or claim gifts from work or friends (such as moving boxes). It’s about planning a purchase. If your move is related to a job change, you may even be able to deduct the cost of the move from your taxes.

There are two common moving costs that are easy to save money on:

Packaging

Be sure to have enough boxes, tapes, and bubble wrap, as secure packaging often makes a big difference in the condition of the cargo arriving at your destination, especially when traveling long distances. Ask for old boxes at work (be sure to ask your boss before picking up the boxes, as some companies have special policies about taking used boxes and packing materials home), friends and Ask your neighbors for boxes, old milk cartons, and packing materials. Reduce/Recycle . Moving is a great time to unload things you rarely or never use. Start your move by sorting your belongings. A garage sale can generate the cash you need to help with your move while eliminating the time and hassle of moving unwanted items.

Professional movers

Efficient professional movers can significantly reduce the amount of time a move takes while protecting your belongings. Still, they cost money, and mobile services aren’t always cheap. You can save money by hiring a company with a reputation for being fast and efficient, and that takes steps in advance to make it easier for your engines to do their job.
