If you are wondering how to make a video viral, checking up on TikTok trends may be a good idea. In this post we have put up a nice cheat sheet for those TikTokers wondering where to start.
Before you jump right to the counts, it is best to know how following trends can make TikTok videos viral, right?
In its sense, “going viral” means getting more TikTok views and likes, and pushing the TikTok algorithm to recommend a certain video to more viewers. But there is more to that than simply outnumbering other videos on TikTok. Otherwise, with today’s services selling likes, the winner would be the one with the biggest budget.
While surely, you can buy TikTok likes for your video, it is clear that the best content sells itself. There are broad and generic definitions of what the best content on TikTok is like, and we are not going to define it once more.

Below are the top 5 TikTok trends of 2021 and how they made hundreds of videos go viral. After all, what could be a better way to learn how to make a video viral than looking into the ones that are already viral?
TikTok Music Trends 2021 (and more)
From the recently released Music Report, it is not hard to see what trending music has catapulted creators to fame. From Megan Thee Stallion to Cardi B and Drake, we try not to make the list infinite.
And of course, there are influencers whose names came to light after they jumped on the trend.
#SeaShanty 6.2B views
The first on this list is the TikTok trend with 6.2 billion views that has gone viral in the beginning of 2021. In its Year-In-Review report TikTok described Nathan Evans “the salty sea dog most responsible for the surprising shanty surge” , the Scottish singer and postman as the cause for the trend.
Yet, if you think he was the only one who topped his profile with 1.4 million followers and 9.8 million likes in total, you are mistaken!
Searching the hashtag #SeaShanty will feature dozens of videos from emerging and established influencers on TikTok. Many of them, like André Sguerra, a Broadway actor and singer, would end up on the For You page racking up 1.2 million TikTok likes. His duet with @jonnystewartbass has been viewed over 6.2 million times and accumulated more than 700 thousand likes, despite him having just 100k followers. You wish you knew how to make TikTok videos as viral as him, right?
Besides André Sguerra, Malinda, another singer on TikTok, has not one but 4 of her #SeaShanty videos on the For You page. Can you guess how many TikTok views and likes those four videos have brought in collectively?
17.8 million views and 1 million 866 thousand TikTok likes!
Isn’t this obvious how following TikTok trends can make your videos go viral?
The popularity of the #SeaShanty quickly grew and became a real-world Wellerman challenge with more musicians and famous people creating duets with Evans, who gained over 600 thousand followers in the weeks following the Wellerman challenge.
Did you know? The trend also has helped Evan’s career, catapulting him into the top 20 of the Spotify U.S. Viral 50 chart.
#AdultSwim 6.3B views
Once the VANO 3000 created the #AdultSwim sound, remixing the “Time Moves Slow” song, the trend quickly caught fire with hundreds of thousands of TikTok creators feeling the Adult Swim nostalgia.
Of all creators who followed this trend, Cesar Gonzalez stands out. Calling himself the RockRunner this TikToker does the unthinkable. With only 2 videos uploaded, Cezar has already gained 21k followers and 2.7 million likes.
Not surprisingly, the one which has brought him more followers and likes being the viral #AdultSwim video. The video has been viewed over 8.2 million times and liked by roughly one third of its viewers(yes, Math geniuses, it’s 2.7 million likes!).
You may think, how come a single video gone viral generates this number of followers and likes, right?
There is no magic, just the cause that resonates with many late-night cartoon watchers as the Adult Swim bumpers featuring pools, lifeguards, and more.
Another TikToker named Justin also knows how to make TikTok videos viral by following TikTok trends. At the time of writing his profile has around 26k followers and 5.5 million likes with 90% of videos being average.
No, we are not judging the content, just analyzing the regular number of likes and views with the occasional bumps up to 50k and over.
Yet, a particular one, which is also a part of the #AdultSwim trend, gets viral and racks up over 14 million views and 3.1 million likes!
#SwiftTok 4.9B views
Are you a fan of Taylor Swift? Then, #swifttok may be the way to make TikTok videos viral.
Almost as big as the previous two, #SwiftTok has over 4.9 billion views and counting.
Officially announced via a Newsroom update on August 23, 2021, #SwiftTok is rooted in Taylor uploading her first ever TikTok on that day. Whether she joined to promote her soon-to-be released “RED” album or to interact with fans like you, over 180k videos were released in the first weeks of #SwiftTok tag’s popularity.
It is arguably who benefits most from celebrity-related trends. Regardless, #SwiftTok has helped Cierra Chantal, Brik Brok, and other Swift fans on TikTok get videos on the For You page.
One of Chantal’s recent videos titled “They already know Taylor Swift” has gained over 1.8 million views and nearly 400k likes in just a few weeks, bumping up the overall count of likes on profile to half a million!
Who would have doubted how effective following trends are with Chantal reaching nearly 500k TikTok likes with only 2k followers?
Brock Johnson, or Brik Brok we mentioned earlier, is yet another Taylor fan who “cashed on views and likes” joining the #SwiftTok trend. With impressive 4.5 million views and nearly 500k likes on one of his #swifttok videos, Brock is yet another TikTok creator with a handful of followers who has the recipe on how to make TikTok videos viral.
Isn’t he?
#TortillaTrend 4.7B views
If cooking is your thing and you are wondering how to make TikTok videos viral, #TortillaTrend is the kind of trend to follow.
Everything from the sweetest desserts to the Mexican original one – no surprise hundreds of views and likes are sent every second. The trend which has allegedly started by Alexandra Jonsson whose upload on how to wrap tortillas went viral, did actually exist on TikTok.
Yet, the owner of the @simplefood4you account goes down in history as the #Tortilla Trend setter. Since her first tortilla trend video, Jonsson has been featured on the For You page twice, quickly increasing the number of followers and likes tenfold. As of today, Alexanra’s videos hashtagged #tortillatrend have amassed a whopping 83.4 million views and over 7.3 million likes.
That said, the trend has somewhat leveled off compared to the beginning of the year when every self-respecting chef rushed to upload his own edition of the tortilla wrap.
#LifeGoesOn 3B views
Just like all other TikTok trends, the #LifeGoesOn originally is a song by BTS, a well-known K-pop boy band, which has been confused with the one by Oliver Tree. Searching for the truth, you will see that whatever the original idea, OLiver Tree is the one who started the #LifeGoesOn TikTok trend.
The ultimate ode to moving on with life after the heartbreak, the missing song from Tree’s debut album “Ugly is Beautiful”, “The Life Goes On” quickly became a thing reaching 3 billion views and still counting.
In fact, Tree and his song made it to TikTok’s 2021 Yearbook as “one of the year’s fastest-growing and most effortlessly shareable stars on TikTok scored a hit with this vibey and infectious pop jam”.
A TikTok user named taylorn4sh has followed the Life Goes On trend and made one of his videos viral. That is even more confusing as the young creator has a little over 20k followers and a handful of videos.
To be exact, the The LifeGoesOn challenge video was actually his first, which did not prevent him from getting 7.7 million views and 1.4 million likes.
Sadly, the user seemed to be inactive for weeks following the challenge and the two of his last videos did not receive enough views or likes. This again shows how important TikTok trends are and why re-creating your own viral videos would make more sense in the absence of original TikTok ideas.
An interesting idea came from the Bunny Day Off user, featuring an unwitting bunny being dressed in a funny cap that may repel some PETA activists while the Tree’s “Life Goes On” song plays in the background. Luckily for this bunny rabbit, or rather for his owner, a video got viral and has been viewed 16.4 million times and nearly 3 million times liked.

To Wrap It Up
From the examples above it is clear how following trends on TikTok coincides with videos going viral.
If you followed this post, you should know by now that popular sounds and songs not only help make TikTok videos viral, but propel a creator to fame.
From Malinda’s example you should also learn that a content for a certain trend can be repeated and re-created multiple times and still loved by the audience.
Also, while there are even more interesting trends to jump right into creation, it is best if the TikTok trend is relevant to your niche. Just like the #TortillaTrend not only sparked the general interest in tortilla wraps and recipes, but catapulted influencers in the first place.
