INTERVIEW: Ancient Settlers

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

R. (Rex & Antony). Hello Vents, we are fine, and recently working a lot on the promotion of the new album.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Cast In Gold”?

R. (Antony) This song was my first choice for a single. One of our more melodic songs with a nice fast pace behind it. It also has very intimate and honest lyrics within.  I try to always compose something private in the lyrics that has a lot of meaning. This song is no exception.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

R. (Antony) Yes. These things are personal to me so I like to keep them to myself. However, what I like our fans to do is take the lyrics and use them for their own inspiration in life. Creating their own meaning and memories for the song.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

R. (Rex). The video corresponds to the second chapter of our animated sci-fi film. The process was developed by Dronicon Film according to the guideline proposed by the band. About our experience, I think was really great, because they were able to catch the idea behind the song and what we want to tell about our society.

The single comes off your new album Our Last Eclipse: The Settlers Saga Pt. 1– what’s the story behind the title?

R. About the album (Rex). The tittle of the album talks about our society, the album tries to describe our perspective about what we are living right now, and how our society loss the north. Our dystopian perspective makes us to consider, the end of our world after that last eclipse.

About the single, (Antony) This title is about a dream I had as a child. I was swimming in a dark lake alone and when I looked up at the moon, it started to shake and then plummet from sight. At that moment in the dream, I knew the world had come to an end. When Rex presented the music for this track, I finally had a place for this concept and it turned out killer.

How was the recording and writing process?

R. (Rex), Both processes were hard, due to the pandemic outbreak. However, the motivation was so high to stop us. Herman & I develop all the structure of the song and run the pre-production of the album during some weeks, using the zoom-skype strategy. After that Herman records the drums in Portugal, then I record all the strings sections and arrangements here in Spain. When we finished, Rene added the synth and Keyboards and Recorded their lines in France, and finally, Antony worked with all the completed music and arranged the lyrics and recorded them in the USA. All the process was run between February and March of 2021. Of course, it all would be better together, but the world situation made it impossible.

With all this done, we send the music to the legendary Fredrik Nordstrom in Sweden, and in August he unleashed his magic in the mix and master process.

What role does San Sebastian play in your music?

R. (Rex) San Sebastian by his history, the weather and the countryside is the perfect place to write a metal album. You can really find the inspiration on the powerful waves of the sea, or in the green mountains. Also, the rain is a crucial part of the place, and if you don’t one to go outside… you take the guitar and starts to write a new song.

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

R. (Rex) An easy question. Basically, looking the news, living the life, and see what’s happens around us. Our society arrives to a pandemic outbreak in a fragile situation (Wars, Violence, Gender inequality, climate change, starving), and after two years we just go worse than before. What we can try to do, is take all these, reflect about, and create our own atmosphere, inviting everyone to move forward. Because one day our last eclipse will arrive.

What else is happening next in Ancient Settlers’ world?

R. (Rex) In April, finally our first full-length album will be released. We are preparing another videoclip to support the promotion, and we are schedule our next European Tour that will be run in October 2022. Of course, if the situation is appropriate, and in that case we hope to see you there.
