19 Seasons (and Counting): ABC Renews “Grey’s Anatomy”

When Shonda Rhimes first introduced the world at large to her soapy medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, there’s little reason to think that she suspected the series would go on to win legions of fans, score dozens of Emmy Award nominations and ultimately join the pantheon of other pop culture phenomenon’s. Well, it did all of that and much, much more, shushing naysayers that claimed a show focusing on the lives of medical professionals would be a no-sell (obviously those same pundits never followed other similar offerings like Ben Casey, E.R. or Scrubs).

In its latest achievement as announced by our St. Elsewhere aficionados over at The Hollywood Reporter, Grey’s Anatomy has scored yet another double digit renewal, receiving an early season 19 pickup from home network ABC. What’s more, original star of the show Ellen Pompeo has inked a brand-new deal to return to the hospital hallways and byways. She’ll be rejoining two other original Grey’s veterans Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr. when season 19 makes its 2022-23 premiere.

In a press release announcing the Grey’s renewal, Big Wheel for Walt Disney Television Dana Walden said that Grey’s Anatomy is a true phenomenon, beloved by audiences around the world. Whether they catch it live on ABC, or stream it on Hulu or globally on Disney+ or Star+, it’s clear that fans can’t get enough of Shonda Rhimes’ brilliant creation. We have enormous faith in Shonda, Krista Vernoff, Ellen Pompeo and the entire creative team to unlock new, untold stories that will continue to focus on modern medicine, tackle the issues that shape the world around us, and resonate deeply with loyal fans for years to come.”

Grey’s Anatomy is anomalous among most other long-running shows in that, after nearly two decades, the series has maintained a huge toehold in the ever-important ratings, tying with other ABC fave This Is Us among TV watchers in the 18-49 demographic.

“I couldn’t be more excited that we get to keep telling the stories of Meredith, Bailey, Richard and all of the other doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial for another season,” Rhimes said in a statement. “This is a true testament to Krista Vernoff, the cast, the crew and all the writers who keep the audience on the edge of their seats week after week. And it would not be possible without the generations of incredible fans who have supported Grey’s Anatomy for so many years.”

Happy 19th to all of the mensch’s behind the past 18 seasons of Grey’s Anatomy; here’s to a fun and exciting season 19 later in 2022!
