Music has always been Andrea Plamondon’s destiny, but life took her down many roads before she got there. From progressive rock to Middle Eastern music, she has a rich and varied background. This is all evident in her new single and music video, “Only Eden”, where her ethereal vocals and dreamy visuals combine to tell a lovely story. VENTS recently had the pleasure of interviewing Andrea Plamondon, you can read that interview below.
When did you find your way to music? What events in your life pushed you to pursue it?
As a kid I was a movie and theater buff , which passion led to my playing leading roles in dramatic and musical productions during high school and college.
How did being a part of the band scene help shape your sound? How would you describe your sound?
Being part of the band scene allowed me to collaborate and perform various genres. I also studied opera and Middle Eastern music during that period. So, I was trying out my opera chops in progressive rock bands, and blending opera and Middle Eastern music. It was a very interesting time.
You have been on seven cross country hitchhiking trips, what are some memorable experiences from those trips and how do you incorporate them into your music?
On one trip I met travelers from Quebec Province on Vancouver Island, Canada. We hired a private prop plane and flew from Vancouver to the Yukon territories about 100 miles south of the Arctic Circle. During the journey I wrote and performed a lot of music on my guitar, later hitchhiking north to Inuvik and then across Canada to Montreal, where I continued Busking.
How did you and Connor Hutton collaborate on this project? What was it like working together?
I was searching for a composer to create an arrangement for Michal Lorencs’ Ave Maria on Upwork, (formerly Elance). Connor was one of the composers who answered my ad. He subsequently listened to my voice on social media and requested to work with me on several of his original pieces. We began an e-mail correspondence, which culminated in my writing melodies and lyrics for the music. One of the pieces became “Only Eden.”
What is “Only Eden” about? What is your message to listeners?
“Only Eden” is essentially a song about how things are not what they used to be. Since the music was more suitable to a lyrical approach rather than a political one, the song is not as hard hitting as say songs by activists, but is more subtle, pastoral, and nostalgic.
How was it filming and editing the music video for “Only Eden”?
Filming was quite challenging, since we didn’t have a lot of fancy equipment, we used the geology of the place, ie a high promontory to film some of the scenes. Unfortunately, BLM came in while we were shooting and cut down most of the trees to create more grazing for the antelope, so we were unable to finish all the shots we had planned. Editing and coloring the film was also pretty challenging, especially since it was my first time working in film and with DaVinci Resolve.
