The Hollywood Reporter revealed yesterday that actor Hugh Jackman (Les Miserables, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Real Steel) has been diagnosed with COVID-19, forcing him to temporarily drop out of the Broadway production of The Music Man. This unexpected development has also forced the hands of the producers of the musical production, sending it into mothballs through the end of this year.
Wasting no time in getting in front of this particular story, Jackman headed onto Instagram late yesterday to break the news of his diagnosis in a thirty second video. Jackman’s new prognosis is considered a breakthrough case as the actor is already fully vaccinated: “I just wanted you to hear from me that I have tested positive this morning for COVID. My symptoms are like a cold – I have a scratchy throat and a bit of a runny nose. But I’m fine and I’m just going to do everything I can to get better ASAP, and as soon as I’m cleared I’ll be back onstage heading to River City.”
Jackman’s diagnosis of breakthrough COVID comes hot on the heels of the news of his co-star in The Music Man Sutton Foster also coming down with a breakthrough case, causing the Ridley Jones star to miss a handful of shows herself.
Shortly after Jackman’s announcement, the producers of The Music Man revival took to their official Twitter to announce their steps going forward, explaining that all performances of the legendary Broadway staple are canceled through January 1. Their immediate plans are in bringing the show back as of January 2 at the Winter Garden Theater. Already have tickets for the newly canceled shows? Fear not, Dear and Constant Reader: Full refunds will be granted for the remainder of the holiday season shows. This is the latest bit of pandemic era angst for The Music Man which was originally intended to hit Broadway in September, but had to cool its heels as the latest wave of COVID-19 swept through the Big Apple. Previews for the revival had only begun on December 20 before they had to cancel their December 25-26 matinee performances, citing yet more breakthrough cases.
Our best wishes for a quick and full recovery for Hugh Jackman and the entirety of The Music Man production; one way or the other, we’re confident, Broadway will be graced by this exciting revival.
