A Sequel We Thought We’d Never See: Director Buddy Cooper Brushes off His 1984 Classic Slasher Flick “The Mutilator” for a Direct Sequel

This one feels like a delightfully late Christmas present: According to our fiendish ghouls over at Bloody Disgusting News, the cult classic slasher film The Mutilator is poised for a sequel – 37 years after the original flick premiered.

In case you weren’t anywhere near a shopping-mall cineplex back in ’84, and if you didn’t spend your weekends like this horror movie fan haunting the local mom and pop video store, The Mutilator has a simple yet effective storyline. To wit, a group of college party hounds make trek to a secluded island property over an extended autumn break. Things aren’t coming up keg stands and promiscuous Bacchanalia for these kids, however: Faster than you can say “I think you should get tested,” the would-be-scholars are methodically stalked and killed in increasingly elaborate ways by a mysterious murderer who has a potential connection to one of the kids in the vacation party; it’s always something, right?

Written and directed by Buddy Cooper (with an assist in the directing department by John S. Douglass), The Mutilator didn’t exactly set the box-office on fire upon its theatrical release. Rather, this little blood-soaked haiku really made its bones via good old fashioned video cassette, becoming a cult favorite over the years to those of us who thought films like Friday the 13th Part III were high art. However, where the Friday films inspired an endless succession of sequels over the years, The Mutilator has stayed in the rarified grounds of horror movies that have but one film to their credits. Until now, that is.

Director Buddy Cooper has been announced as returning for a direct sequel to The Mutilator and, what’s more, he’s bringing along with him two alumni from the original, Bill Hitchcock and Ruth Martinez. Rounding out the cast of the new chapter in The Mutilator saga is Weekend at Bernie’s sensation Terry Kiser and Damian Maffei of Haunt fame; Happy New Year, Earth.

In a press release heralding the return of The Mutilator, the upcoming sequel’s composer Alexander Taylor (Isolation) said that he was “so honored and excited to be a part of The Mutilator franchise. One of the best parts of this is the fact that Buddy Cooper is back! It’s rare for a legacy film to have the original writer and director come back, so you know this is going to be special. Buddy and I already have some cool themes and wild ideas for the score.”

The Mutilator 2 begins production in 2022, but our anticipation has already begun to percolate! Stay tuned to these very pages for any and all updates!
