Getting Feedback on Writing: Tricks that Help to Succeed

You have some audience if you are a writer. It is evident that you will get some feedback to your ideas and style of writing. There are different contexts for that: readers’ reviews, editor’s notes, comments from the peer writers, and others. Are you ready to acknowledge that some feedback is going to be negative?

Essay writers are always vulnerable. They are exposed to criticism, judgmental comments, and subjective opinions. It may happen that people will give harsh comments without any explanations. Getting feedback on writing can hurt, and you have to realize this aspect from the very beginning. If you are not ready to deal with negative remarks, you will not feel confident as a writer. Nevertheless, it can be complicated to get the feedback, it is important for you as a writer.

You cannot get an objective picture of what you do without knowing the opinions of other people. Do you want to make your writing more advanced? Then you can focus your primary attention on the areas mentioned in the review.

How Can You Get Feedback? Main Stages

You have to accept that feedback is a must for you
Writers require critique and you are not an exception to this rule. You need a review of what you have done. It is not easy to see which approaches work and which fail unless you hear about that from your reviewers. Whatever piece of writing you have been working on, submit it only after someone has reviewed it.

Check whether your writing is ready for getting feedback

You may wonder about a suitable moment to request for review. There is no such moment. You can ask someone to review your first draft or wait until it is the final one. The only wrong thing to do is to keep writing until midnight and then quickly send it to meet the deadline. We understand that you try to avoid getting fined for lateness, but sending the paper to a teacher without proofreading is a mistake. If you look through your final paper the next morning, you will see lots of typos, silly mistakes in grammar, and confusing sentences that you notice at once. You should also check the spacing as well. Unless the teacher asks for a different one, choose double spacing. Your readers will appreciate that!

Choose a reviewer not from the circle of your friends or family

It is natural to reach out to a person who you have known for ages. Family members and closest friends seem to be the most suitable reviewers for your papers, but it is a common mistake that the majority of the beginners make. What are the reasons for that? Let’s think about the main ones.

Do not you think that your family and friends love you too much to give you some negative review? They might tell you what you would like to hear. You may get comments in the form of one sentence, something like “It is fantastic” or “It may seem to me you are great at that.” They want to give you encouragement, and it is natural for them to show their love and support.

Are you sure that your family and friends ae your perfect targeted readers? Do they have any knowledge of the subject matter you want to cover? Have they got any experience of writing? How can they judge your work if they do not understand it?

Are your friends and family readers at all? You have taken a lot of effort and you want the people you love to see how difficult it was and how you managed to succeed. Still, if they have not read much of stuff like that, will they be capable of judging it? It can be difficult for them to read through your paper and understand all the ideas.

Get feedback from five – ten reviewers

If you set a goal to get feedback from ten people, some may refuse for some reasons. As a result, you may get feedback from maximum eight people. It is not a problem, as you will see a lot of repetitions in their ideas. Still, you will be able to handle the comments and improve your writing.

Explain which feedback you would like to get

Be clear about what you want when you reach your reviewers. Ask them to check whether the paper is well written if you need a technical feedback. Request for the evaluation of the matching of your writing to the audience you want to get. Then you get a conceptual feedback.

Readers may give you the comments you will not be able to apply if you do not guide them. Let them know what you expect them to do. Ask them to focus on the style of storytelling, structure of the paper, grammar mistakes, or pace of the flow. It will be much more effective than to get the feedback on the aspects you are not going to change.

It will be similar to the feedback from your family, when they will tell you something like, “I like that!” If they have your comments on what you expect, they will try their best to assist you.

No offence!

It is natural to be unhappy, hearing negative or even neutral comments. You have shared your work to hear about the weak aspects, but you hope to get encouraged. You have spent so much time on this piece and now you are waiting for the verdict. You hear the remarks and start behaving defensively. You support or reject some comments and you are hurt with the feedback overall. It is fine!

We cannot just order you to stop feeling hurt. Still, you need to find a solution and control your feelings. Recognize that it is an unproductive approach to writing. You may want to disregard all the remarks, but then you will miss your chance to get valid comments that could help you improve your paper a lot.

Keep in mind that you are the captain

If you believe that you are the only writer who gets negative feedback, you are wrong. What is more, it can be controversial. One person may tell you that you sound too casual in your paper, while two others will highlight your sense of humor as one of your strengths. It can be weird to read about a too wide scope of facts in one review, and about a too narrow one in another. That can make you feel really frustrated.

Still, what you need to take into consideration is that you are the authority in your own writing! You should value the opinions of other people, but you can rely on your own viewpoint as well.

Even if you are experienced in writing, it is helpful to ensure getting feedback on writing several times. You will change your draft every time you get a valuable comment, and your final paper is going to get perfect in all aspects.
