IOTA

IOTA: Is it Worth Investing?

Summary:

  1. The Internet of Things (IoT) is one of the most lucrative markets for investors today. It is worth about $212 billion and it is expected to become even bigger in future.
  2. Microsoft considers IOTA to be a promising partner in working towards the future of the Internet of Things (IoT).
  3. The IOTA system uses a tip selection algorithm with ‘confidence’ as a measure to ensure that the transaction is secure

IOTA

IOTA was designed for the internet of things (IoT). So what is IOTA? It is an open-source distributed ledger and cryptocurrency that uses a directed acyclic graph to store transactions on its ledger. IOTA was designed to solve the scalability issues in the crypto market. IOTA introduced fee-less transactions, keeping the concept of decentralization; but it is somewhat centralized because the coordinator node controls the network.

Although the IOTA foundation has stated that the coordinator node will eventually be removed, this will only happen after the network becomes large enough so that no one can afford to control a majority of the nodes. Once the centralization aspect is removed, IOTA will be more efficient and a new consensus network known as shimmer will be implemented. Shimmer will use a reward known as ‘Mana’ for nodes that perform well within the network.

IOTA has partnered with some of the world’s biggest companies such as Microsoft and Volkswagen. This is only possible because the vision of the IOTA foundation aligns with the vision and the future goals of these companies. For instance, IOTA offers many functionalities that numerous companies can take advantage of.

So how does IOTA work?

IOTA enables transactions between connected devices and anyone can be able to access it. IOTA aims to do away with several Bitcoin concepts and topographical constraints of blockchain. Tangle, a Decentralized Acyclic Graph (DAG) i.e. a system of nodes that is not sequential, is the data structure used to process transactions in IOTA. With tangle, each node can be connected to multiple other nodes in one particular direction, meaning that a node cannot refer back to itself. Tangle is a parallel system, and transactions are processed simultaneously instead of sequentially. The more nodes there are, the more secure and efficient tangle becomes at processing transactions.

With tangle, each new transaction is confirmed by referencing two previous transactions. This reduces the amount of time and memory needed to verify a transaction. The two transactions chosen to verify a transaction are referred to as tips. In order to approve the transaction, the IOTA system uses a tip selection algorithm with ‘confidence’ as a measure to ensure that the transaction is secure. For instance, if a transaction has been approved 97 times before, then there is 97% confidence that a node will approve it in the future.

Also when it comes to approving a transaction, there is a transaction weight. This means that as a transaction moves through Tangle, it gathers weight. This transaction weight increases with the number of approvals.

Once a transaction is approved, it is broadcast to the entire network. At this point, another unconfirmed transaction can choose the newly confirmed transaction as one of the two tips needed to confirm itself. This method of confirming transactions is the key to ensuring that transactions are fee-less and consume less power. This enables IOTA to be used across a wide variety of devices and machines with varying power requirements.

Is IOTA a good investment?

If you are looking to add IOTA to your investment portfolio, there are a few things you should know:

1. Tangle, unlike blockchain, painlessly tackles the scalability issue that troubles cryptocurrencies. This means that with more users, it becomes faster and this efficiency is a great attraction for any investor.

2. IOTA has fee-less transactions. As an investor, this means that you won’t lose money in transaction fees while buying or selling IOTA.

3. IOTA is a quick-growing venture considering that it was first introduced in 2017. As such, it can give investors good future returns because its value will keep rising.

4. Mining in IOTA is different from mining in other PoW networks. For instance, miners are not awarded with new tokens instead of getting a portion of each transaction fee.

5. The official IOTA token is MIOTA. Currently, 100% of the limited supply of 2,779,530,283 MIOTA tokens is in circulation.
